While reading the novel Wonder, students will create comic strips for every chapter of the book. There are two "big" sections for the student to complete: the beginning section allows for where the character started and the end section is where the character is by the end of the chapter. Then 5 "small" sections in between to demonstrate the development of the main character within the chapter. Students will need to add a thought bubble with text-evidence to support the image.

Graphic organizers are a helpful tool to organizing, clarifying, and simplifying information within a text. The comic strip activity acts as a graphic organizer by constructing visual representations of a concept to further understand and recognize relationships between scenes. ELL students will benefit from a graphic organizer by visually representing the material to form relationships between text and image for the development of the main character.

After reading the chapter and completing the comic strip activity. Students will write a 5 paragraph sentence explaining the events that led up to the decision of Auggie attending school. Students will be able to use their comic strips, as this will act as a blueprint of the specific events (5 small sections) that led to the first day of school (end section). The step up to writing template is separated into sections that students need to fill in. Reducing the anxiety and daunting task of writing a paragraph. The template is filled with visual aids for ELL/SPED students to help make connections between tasks. Students must address at least 2 episodes within the chapter and explain how those 2 episodes led to Auggie attending school.

Based on the results of the SUTW prompt, if remediation is necessary, a review of the comic strips as a whole class will be done. I will go through the comic strips and pull 5 good, 5 average and 5 poor strips. Students will be grouped into pairs by students meeting standard and students below standard. I will have students go around visiting different comic strips. Students will fill in a worksheet that will ask them to grade the comic strip, explanation for that score and an area to take notes. Ask a class we will review what made a comic strip good, fair, and poor. Students will return to their desks and with their partners, they will update their comic strips and rewrite their SUTW prompt with the collaboration of their partner.
