Greek Civil War (1943-1948)

The Greek Civil War happened when a group of Greek Communist tried to overthrow the Greek Government. In the end, the communists lost due to the increased aid Greece received from the Truman Doctrine.

Fall of the Berlin Wall (1989-1990)

The Berlin Wall was taken down and East and West Berlin reunited for the first time since 1945. People who helped knock the wall down with hammers and picks were known as “mauerspechte,” or “wall woodpeckers“. Cranes helped take large sections of the wall down.

Marshall Plan (1947)

The Marshall Plan was created to provide aid to European countries that were facing poverty after WWII. The US believed that this aid would prevent these countries from falling under communism.

Bay of Pigs 1959

Fidel Castro came to power after a revolt in Cuba. The US government dispatched troops to the Bay of Pigs, which is a swampy location on the southern coast of Cuba. The Cuban planes shot at them and killed a lot of people.

Berlin Wall Erected (1961-1989)

In Germany the city of Berlin was split into two halves with this wall. With West Berlin belonging to the US and the British and the east to the USSR. Many tried to escape east Berlin to go west so Stalin put up a concrete wall with barbed wire to prevent this.

Berlin Airlift (1948-1949)

The Berlin Airlift was a response to the Berlin Blockade by the USSR. The USSR tried to block off all of West Berlin so that the USSR can have full control of all of Berlin. This Blockade prevented all resources from being sent to West Berlin, until the USA started the Berlin Airlift where resources would be sent into West Berlin through air (instead of roads).

Nixon Visits Communist China (1949-1972)

By the 1970s, the American government began the process of easing the Cold War tensions. President Richard Nixon Visited Communist China by traveling to Beijing for a week and met the Chinese Communist Party chairman Mao Zhedong.

Korean War(1950-1953)

Before the Second World War Japan previously had control of Korea so the US and USSR decide to split it in half dividing it into North and South Korea. The leader, Kim II Sung attempted to reunify by storming the South. The US found out this was funded by the soviets so the US funded South Korea. This ended in a ceasefire and to this day the North is still communist while the South is still capitalist.

Cuban Missile Crisis 1962

The Soviet Union placed missiles in Cuba and the US found out. Messages were exchanged between president Kennedy and Soviet premier Khrushchev. They came to an agreement and they removed the missiles and Cuba and the US also removed their missiles in Turkey.

NATO is a military alliance that was created between democratic countries against the USSR. This alliance promised that if one of its countries is attacked, it would be considered an attack on all member countries. This was aimed at promoting democracy, preventing conflict, and help member countries.

Vietnam War, 1954-1974

After Vietnam was freed from France colonial rule, it was split into North Vietnam(Communist) and South Vietnam (Non-communist). Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh wanted to unite the two halves under communist leadership but the US didn't want that. The US sent two million troops to Vietnam but eventually South Vietnam fell to communism and the US had to leave.

This was the first place an artificial Earth satellite was launched. This is because during this time it was a race between the US and USSR to see who could make it to space first. In the end Russia had the superior technology which put a satellite in space however America was the first to put a man on the moon

As communism rose in Eastern Europe and China, Americans feared that communism would gain power in the USA. This caused the Second Red Scare. Many people, like Alger Hiss, were arrested for supposedly helping the Soviet Union. This escalated when the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) was created, and when Senator McCarthy proclaimed that there were State Officials in the Communist Party. These accusations were never proven. Therefore, hundreds of innocent people had their careers ruined by this, which became known as McCarthyism.
