The Gathering storm - By: Austin Yan by Austin Yan

The Civil War was the bloodiest war in United States History. There were many different reasons that the war could've started, but the biggest one should be the issue on slavery. The Union wanted slavery to be totally abolished and never to be practiced again. On the other hand, the Confederacy wanted slavery to be spread to other places and to practice it for a long time.

Then, in 1849, when California applied to be a free state, a new bill was proposed. The bill said that there was going to be an imaginary line. Slavery south of the line would be still in practice and slavery above the line would be abolished. However, this was highly debated and Congress was still in debate at the end of the year.
Source: picturethis.museumca.org
