How does Beneatha stand out physically?

Beneatha's character is very unique. She doesn't fit in with the rest of the world and she doesn't want to. Even just the way she looks is unique. Beneatha is slim and has an intellectual look to her. Just by looking at her, you can tell that she is an educated woman, "...but her lean, almost intellectual face has a handsomeness of its own." (Hansberry, Act I, Scene One, Narrator).

Another Physical trait of Beneatha is that she is a woman. This may not seem very important but it plays a huge role in Beneatha's conflict. At the time, women weren't expected to be anything more than wives and mothers. However, Beneatha aspires to be a doctor. This is radical for the time period and even her own family discourages her of this idea occasionally.

How does Beneatha stand out culturally, psychologically, and emotionally?

Beneatha is a very liberated character. She's forward thinking and determined to prove herself as a black woman in the early to mid 1900s. Beneatha is the opposite of conventional, she's educated, atheist, and open to other cultures. A conflict arises when she tries to connect with other people. It seems that everyone is disapproving. Asaiga and George both think she's too liberated. George wants her to just sit quiet and look pretty, "You’re a nice-looking girl ... all over. That’s all you need, honey, forget the atmosphere. Guys aren’t going to go for the atmosphere—they’re going to go for what they see. Be glad for that. Drop the Garbo routine. It doesn’t go with you." (Act II, Scene Two, George), and Asagai wants her to be a house wife (Act II, scene one). Mama is disapproving of her religious standpoint (Act I, Scene Two)

Beneatha is very unique. she is strong in her beliefs, even if no one else agrees with her. She's very intelligent and loves to have knowledge about everything. Though she's mature in her liberal nature, she is still a 20 year old college student. She can be stubborn and have that "teenage" attitude, like when she compared her brother to the frog she dissected,
"... I dissected something that looked just like you yesterday." (Act I, Scene one).

The poster created during world war II supporting feminism represents Beneatha very well. Beneatha doesn't want to be just a house wife or a mother, she wants to educate herself and use that to help others. Beneatha doesn't care if George doesn't find her attractive or not after she cut her hair. She doesn't live her life for men, she lives it for herself. "That’s up to George. If he’s ashamed of his heritage" (Act II, Scene One, Beneatha).

This poster is encouraging women to do just that. Make something of themselves and live to their potential, not their husband's.

Fire is often used as symbolism for passion and motivation. To me this relates to Beneatha's perseverance and determination. Even though all of society is telling her that being different is wrong and she should just conform to the social cast, Beneath continues to be a radical feminist. "but first I’m going to be a doctor, and George, for one, still thinks that’s pretty funny. I couldn’t be bothered with that. I am going to be a doctor and everybody around here better understand that!" (Act I, Scene One, Beneatha).
