This was qualitative phenomenological research study, which utilized 2-3 hour in-depth semi-structured, participant led interviews two adult participants, as well as naturalistic observation of transgender youth between the ages of 5 and 21. The interviews were transcribed, along with naturalistic observation notes. Four overarching themes were identified: understanding of one’s own gender; societal gender roles and expectations; societal consequences of gender identity; discovering language to describe one’s own transgender experience; finding transgender community. A key finding was the relationship between an individual's experience of their gender and societal responses to transgender people. Often, when children express that they are a gender other than the one they are assigned at birth, parents dismiss this as “a phase”, or parents reject the idea for a variety of other reasons, including religious convictions, lack of knowledge and fear.Recent trends in policy, research, and clinical practice have been moving away from a trauma focused practice, focusing instead on resilience strategies. This shift is partially motivated by a desire to emphasize positive strengths rather than focusing on negative, maladaptive outcomes. The goal has become to foster success instead of treating failure.
