The radio was initially invented back in 1900 by an Italian named Guglielmo Marconi. The very first radio station in the United States was KDKA, first broadcasted on October 27, 1920. The broadcast consisted of election night coverage, which began on November 2. The radio station was soon followed by 500 more stations by 1922. Some more recognizable names are NBC, which started in 1926, and CBS, which started in 1928.

When automobiles were first introduced, they were not owned by very many people. There were 3 types of engines in use. Electric, Steam, and Gas powered. The gas powered engines became the basis due to its price being cheap and being more reliable then steam or electric engines. Henry Ford's use of the production line made the car cheap enough for almost everyone to own one. After 15 years of production, Ford had sold over a million cars. cars were driven by everyone to almost any destination.

In the 1920's, many people took their minds off of the bad and focused on the good things in life. One way of achieving this happiness was by idolizing others for their great accomplishment. Many of these heroes were sports players, businessmen, or in one case, a pilot. Charles Lindbergh was the first man to fly an airplane from New York to Paris. He was idolized by the people of the United States for his great achievements. Some of the other idolized people of the time included Henry Ford, George "Babe" Ruth, Jack "The Manassa Mauler" Dempsey, and Johnny Weismuller. People are now able to idolize people because they now have leisure time.

There is one thing that both men and women's fashion in the 1920's have in common: the essence of capturing youth. The look was also very classy. The 1920's was also the era of jazz music. Jazz was something new, something young. Jazz was able to blend the white and black cultures in the form of song. Jazz at the time was also known as rebellious music, music that made people feel like rebellious teenagers.

People and Consumerism

In the 1920's a new phenomena in the American culture never seen before had emerged: consumerism. In essence, the American people were all buying the same thing. People ate corn flakes in the morning, people went to work in their Ford Model T, people bought and sat around the same radio, and they all saw the same movies at the theater. Consumerism was making America live similar lives, sort of like today's pop culture. Advertising was a main reason as to how America developed the consumer culture.

Americans after the war moved out of a generation of depression and war and into the beginning of a generation of parties, organized crime, and "prohibition." Young students, usually in college, threw huge parties that included smoking and drinking. The only way that these students had access to alcohol was because of the gangsters. The gangs had people go to Canada to get alcohol and bring it back into the country. It was distributed by the gangsters and sold by speakeasies in towns.
