PART ONE: What is a focus group? Why would the producers of Deadpool use Focus Groups and test screenings?

A focus group is a small group of people that have open discussions about a new product or something else to determine the reactions that can be expected from a larger population. I believe that the producers of deadpool will use focus groups as a way of getting other peoples opinions about certain ideas. I also think it will be used to gather a target audience's opinions and attitudes before the film actually goes into consideration.

What is a survey/ Questionnaire? How could the producers of Deadpool use this method to get feedback on their film? Where might they distribute the survey?

Surveys are a method of gathering information from individuals. Surveys have a variety of purposes, and can be conducted in many ways. Surveys may be conducted to gather information through a printed questionnaire, over the telephone, by mail, in person, by diskette, or on the web. A questionnaire is a List of research or survey questions asked to respondents, and designed to extract specific information. The producers of Deadpool could use this method as a way of gathering feedback about their film as they could ask a variety of different people what they thought about the film and what they didn't like and it could help them figure out ways in making the second one better or just as good. It also helps them understand what parts people enjoyed the most and what parts they didn't. They could distribute their survey onto social medias and onto websites. For example , the surveys could pop up when you go onto a website and ask people to complete it before they are allowed on the website. They could also distribute them through competitions and could get people to complete the survey for a chance to win a prize. Surveys can also be distributed via paper and be handed out on the streets.

PART TWO Explain how media producers categorise audiences (discuss what demographics and Psycho-graphics are).

Demographics is the target audience which is categorized into gender, age, sexuality, ethnicity, etc. Media producers categories audiences because when the make the film they have an idea of what the target audience is going to be and what type of stuff they need to include in the film to make it match the correct target audience. Psycho-graphics is a qualitative methodology used to describe consumers on psychological attributes.Psycho-graphics have been applied to the study of personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests, and lifestyles. Media producers catagorise the psycho-graphics by finding out what the target audience spend their money on and what their types of hobbies are and so on.

TASK ONE: What things in the trailer appeal to a male audience? Give detailed examples and clear explanations for your answers.

In the Deadpool trailer the aspects which appeal to the male audience are the action scenes where he is jumping into the air and shooting his gun at people. The highway scenes also when he is fighting and guns are being show is also appealing to the male audience as men tend to enjoy action a lot more than women do. There is also men in the action scenes which is a very traditional aspect as in a lot of the films in the 90's only included men in the action films. Deadpools girlfriend in the film will also attract a male audience as she is good looking and men might become attracted to her and I believe this is why they cast a good looking person as they wanted to draw people in. The trailer also includes strong action and violence and will also draw the male audience in as men tend to enjoy the action genre a lot more than women do. In the trailer we also see a man dragging a women to safety and this could show that men care about there girlfriends and try their best to keep them safe as they believe they are the dominant one in a relationship and it is their job to keep them safe.

Emotion in the trailer will appeal to the women as at the beginning of the trailer he is seen speaking to his girlfriend about how he has got cancer and this is an emotional aspect and women tend to show more emotion than men. Again the man pulling the women to safety may also appeal to the women also because it shows men caring for women and may make the women feel happy and safe. The kissing and romance scenes included in the trailer will also make the women feel things as the women tend to be more associated with romance and romantic gestures. Ryan Reynolds the guy that plays dead pool is also very popular with women as they think he is good looking and I think this could be a reason to why they picked him as the main character and also a reason to why women want to watch the film.

I believe that the age group which this trailer would be aimed at would be ages 15-40 this being because of how there is a lot of violence included in the trailer. It also has strong humor and strong language included in the trailer which wouldn't appeal to ages under 15. Older people would not be interested in this as they are not really interested in action genres so that is why I believe the age category would be 15-40. The film itself is an age 15.

So people might watch the film just because Ryan Reynolds is the main actor in the film and they might really like him as an actor and want to watch the film just because of him. They may also just watch the film because of the director and they might of just enjoyed the directors past films and want to go watching this because o that reason. They might also be interested in superheroes and the trailer does show a few of them. Another interest could be people that enjoy the marvel universe and watch all of the marvel films. The music in the trailer is also hip hop and songs from the 90's which people might be interested in making them more interested in watching the film. Another VAL which I believe the trailer falls into is experiencers as they are youthful and constantly on the go. They enjoy the new and upcoming things .So they might want to go watch Deadpool because it is new and popular. Survivors is also a VAL as it is people on low incomes and people that are not employed so they will have the time to watch a trailer and time to go to the cinema.

What is Stuart Hall's Reception Theory and explain how audiences can have a preferred/ negotiated and oppositional reading to Deadpool. You should use examples from the film.

Stuart Halls reception theory is a theory that audience could respond to a media test in 3 ways. This is an active theory as audiences can respond differently to various media texts. Preferred reading is when the audience interpret texts exactly how producers intend it to-like deadpool when they dislike Francis they prefer people to like deadpool and hate Francis. The negotiated reading is when the audience argue with themselves and they agree with some points and disagree with others , Like characters they are not supposed to. The oppositional readings is when the audience completely reject and disregard producer’s intentions so instead of liking deadpool they dislike deadpool and like Francis instead even though he is the bad guy.

Blumler and Katz's Uses & Gratifications theory (DISS) what scenes in Deadpool distract us? What can we identify with in the film? What information do we attain from the trailer? And how can we interact socially. Detailed examples are a must!

The Blumler and Katz's theory is a theory on how audiences can watch/read/listen to media products. It is an active model and can be remembered using D-I-S-S. D stands for diversion and it means escaping from your everyday ‘boring’ life. People might watch Deadpool as the action scenes , funny scenes and people dressed in costumes might distract them from whatever else is going on in there life. People could also get cultural or aesthetic enjoyment (enjoy watching whats going on). They could even watch it for the lust and desire because they find Ryan Reynolds attractive and that might be the reason they are watching it. The I stands for identification which means finding reinforcement for personal values or gaining an insight into oneself. Finding a sense of model behavior. Deadpool getting cancer and also falling in love near enough the same time could identify with people suffering with cancer. The S stands for surveillance. This is when people retrieve information from watching deadpool. To find out events happening in the world and how these events effect the reader. They might watch a tv show/listen to radio read a newspaper to get some sort of advice or someones personal opinion. Get advice- satisfy curiosity or interest. People can learn more information about the marvel universe. It also shows us Ryan Reynolds opinion on the Green Lantern ( as he played the green lantern). The S stands for social interaction which means what we can do after or whilst watching the film. TV shows or movies gives people the opportunity to chat about things. Use social media and write stuff about it or ask questions. People might want to talk about deadpool with each other.

What is 2 Step Flow and how can it be applied to Deadpool?

A 2 step flow is a theory where people are opinion leaders and other people get influenced by these people and this could be a part of an elite group which we are more likely to be affected by. This theory is one of the reasons why advertisers use celebs in their adverts. E.G Ryan Reynolds being in Deadpool may make people want to watch it as they find him attractive or think he is a good actor. The audience is passive , they take on board the messages that are being presented. The model makes them submissive. This theory also supports TV/Film critics. Good review means they are more likely to watch. A bad review means they are more likely to stay away. This is why quotes of critics go on film posters.

Seriously, I was never a fan of the character (in the sense that I hardly knew anything about him) and the humor as well as the violence seemed forced and overdone in the trailers. Still, I remained interested in the film, I just never expected it to actually be good - until the reviews arrived. After most critics unexpectedly showered this newest superhero movie with praise, I went in cautiously optimistic (but still fully prepared to hate the film)." - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1431045/reviews

"Something incredible has happened.

The hypodermic needle theory is a passive audience theory. This theory suggests that the media messages are injected into the brains of the audience to try and get a response. Audiences are influenced from media texts and do not question what they are being told. The technique is often used in advertising the audience and they are expected to take on messages and be influenced by slogans. Negatives displays how the model audience can be easily influenced in some cases people can become desensitized by what they see in the media(if you watch a lot of horror films all the time then seeing a dead body might not affect them). Video Nasties (80's) has no film classifications on home entertainment (vhs). Children were exposed to horror films E.G Chucky. Two children influenced by the film childs play due to the James Buldger case. Deadpool could cause moral panic due to the violent and graphic scenes.

Women are seen as strong in Deadpool this is seen when Negasonic fights with men and has super powers. Deadpool also uses Negasonic to fight Ajax and helps him by boosting him onto the ledge. She also doesn't care about the way she looks and can easily talk back to men and this is seen quite a lot throughout the film. Another representation of women being strong and independent is when Vanessa is in the bar and a random man walks past and touches her so she hurts the man. This shows independence as she is standing up for herself and not letting men do what they want or relying on men to help her out. Vanessa also stabs Ajax after he has had a battle with Deadpool which also shows women can stand up for themselves and help out when needed. Another example of women being strong is when Angel Dust jumps down from the ship and when she hits her hand hard down on the ground loads of dust comes up which shows her strength. She also manages to beat up Collusus which is something Deadpool couldn't do. Angel is Ajaxs muscle. All these examples deviate away from the normal stereotype of women.

Vanessa is also always well presented and always wearing make up and provocative clothing which shows that women are always expected to look good for men. Another scene which shows women try to look good for men is when Deadpool goes to find her and she is working in a strip club which shows she doesn't want to be by herself and she wants to be around people and feel loved and she is seen as a sexual object being lusted over by men. Another scene which shows women being weak and not being able to fend for themselves is when they are on the highway scene and a man is seen pulling a women which shows that men think they are the stronger sex and think women are incapable of looking out for themselves.

The hero of the film is usually sent on a quest to seek something financial or spiritual. They are usually 'good' and 'admirable' characters and they carry the event of the story. The hero can be victimized and will face adversity throughout the story. Deadpool faces a lot of threats throughout the film such as getting cancer and his girlfriend Vanessa being kidnapped and also Ajax messing up his face.He faces adversity when he gets cancer and has to deal with the thought of dying and faces tough situations to try and save his girlfriend from Ajax.

The villain in the film is Ajax. The villain of the film is the complete opposite of the hero. They are often evil and have little empathy for anyone. By the end of the story the villain is usually taught a lesson. Ajax is taught a lesson by the end of the film as Deadpool manages to save his girlfriend and also Deadpool ends up shooting Ajax in the head and he dies.

The Princess in the film is Vanessa. The princess are usually the hero's reward and the object of the villains schemes. Vanessa is the princess as she is kidnapped by Ajax and Deadpool goes on a mission to save Vanessa. Ajax also uses Vanessa to get to Deadpool and knows that if he takes Vanessa Deadpool will come after him.
