What do you believe needs to be in place (e.g., expectations, attitudes, environment) for AT to be successful?

I think for AT to be successful we need to have an open-minded environment. If we are close-minded, we will not be able to utilize our resources fully and we will not be able to make or use AT uniquely. I think we also need to have a positive optimistic attitude. We want AT to work when we first try something, however, if it does not work, we cannot get discouraged or negative, instead we need to work towards a new solution.

I think that this part of having an open mind because we have to think about what each individual student needs to be successful and not stay in a box by giving everyone the same thing

What do you see as your role as a teacher in the AT process?

I think our primary role is to give support to the students who need assistive technology. We have to advocate for them before the AT process starts, during the AT process, and after the AT process. Another role as a teacher is to make sure we are implementing the AT correctly but then observing what er implement so that we can make adjustments and corrections to help the student continue to be more successful. We should listen and hear our students to make them feel supported, cared for, and like they have a friend.

I think this is important to our role as teachers. We want to uplift and encourage our students. If we focus on changing the individual student, we are doing it wrong. We should be focusing on how to adapt the environment, technology, tools, work, and more to help support the student in being successful

What are the pros and cons of AT use by students with disabilities?

Pros:

-Makes learning, activities, and many other things more accessible

-Creates something individualized to the student

-Creates a support system

- Makes an environment for success

Cons:

-it can get discouraging if ideas are not working

-students could feel "singled out"

-obtaining the resources for AT might be challenging

What is your perspective on the family’s role in the AT process?

I believe that the family's role is to be a support system as well as an advocate, a listener, and a caretaker for their loved one. We as teachers need to understand that it might also be hard on the parents and we need to do our best to respect them, encourage them, be honest with them, and help guide them through the AT process with our knowledge.
