The sparrows in the short story embodies the idea of collectivism. The sparrows are introduced towards the end where Millicent hears them chirping. She visualizes them as looking exactly alike, and lacking individuality. She contrasts the sparrows by the idea of the vibrant and free heather birds.
Millicent reaches an epiphany that she doesn't want to be a sparrow. Instead of being confined to the standards of the sorority, she rejects the invitation to join.
