Beverley Bennette Review (250 Words)

Through the short delivery the audience admires Beverley Bennette's transparency as she states “I’m really honest about my experience as an artist". This leads us to contemplate our inner creative and what it means to invite someone into our workspace. Following her experience of restraint and supremacy within art, she untangles her willingness to engage with overlooked minorities. Using her emotional labor to generate a conversation that naturally draws the audience's attention. This reveals her keen awareness of people and their behaviour, which inspires the audience to open up like a therapy session. When describing her interaction with people, she states "I learn more from my network than they learn from me", which affirms why cultural exchange is so critical to the artist by transforming a once silent space into a tangible embodiment. This teaches us that by reconverting ideas of privilege and testimony, discounted communities can become a gateway to power. Yet, since Bennette's practice is so deeply informed by injustice, she emphasises the importance of accessibility surrounding marginalised communities in the creative field. Therefore, we ask how she negotiates private issues in public spaces when dealing with the community. She replies, "When I’m working in workshops we set up conditions so curators or art directors aren't part of that sharing process. Through this, the resistance between participation and art institutions is broken down, opening up the surrounding environment's silence. While indirectly questioning what safe space means to an artist and whether we feel heavily burdened by opportunity costs?

Garth Gantrix Review (250 W0RDS).

Among the traditional white walls, television and crowded seats, Garth Gantrix stands as a lecturer. Using the Blackpool coastline to reflect his queer identity through contemporary art, he stylistically examines ideas of queerness in relation to space and architecture. Accordingly, he asks the crowd 'how does queerness occupy space?'. Expressing his perspective on material through his recent designs printed on Beach Towels that captivates the poetic symmetry of growing up by the sea. The idea of metaphor that blurs audience boundaries, as we're packed like sardines across the studio floor. Addressing the relationship between bodies and the organised territorial boundary that combines direction in space and a statement about control or exclusion. Aiming to provide members of the audience a voice, an opinion or desire to occupy the gallery space. We therefore ask whether Gantrix' ability to combine design, strategy, and facilitation is a form of curated art performance. Feathering his sense of humour that swiftly reprogrammes the execution into an exchange of spirited ideas. It sets the audience at ease and makes us more receptive to the ideas presented. Yet, it challenges Gantrix's adaptive ego in relation to comical playfulness and queerness. As he blends a light-hearted approach with a very challenging queer experience to distract us from the normative barriers of the 'everyday'that make queer conversation impossible. Artfully repositioning the audience from present to future as the traditional art space morphs into a visionary queer setting. Providing an answer to the audience to how queerness occupies space.

I am very much interested in Art Direction within the Publishing field, as a long term career - on the basis of designing magazine and book print. So, through Google research I have explored alternative roots I take in order to achieve this. With that either having a degree in Fine Art, Graphic Design or Publishing. Although I am soon to graduate in Fine Art, I don't particularly consider my practice to heavily design influenced at the moment. I will admit this is worrying for me as I deem the design industry to be extremely competitive and realise I will need some experience in order to climb the publishing ladder. As a result of this I have decided to expose myself to more design programmes to form a basic knowledge whilst offering artist and design knowledge which I consider important skills within their particular field. Although I have taken a course in Adobe Indesign & Publishing (ACP) and consider that a strength, I am still not entirely confident that I will have a large enough skillset to offer right now. So, throughout this next academic year I plan to purse more courses in Adobe programme's so it can help build on my confidence and allow me attain a transferable skill within the Graphic design. I will then decide if digital design is something I definitely want to pursue and if so I will look into a MA in Graphic Design at Coventry University. Although I would appreciate an MA closer to my home town Birmingham as it'll be easier to commute it seems its city doesn't provide that course as of yet. So Coventry is my closest and safest bet with having studied at Coventry for the past three years I am confident that I will attain the right skills, whilst being able to still work part time in Birmingham.

Following my departure from Coventry University, I aim to take a break from education for the time being in order to find my feet within the arts profession. I will do this by continuing my voluntary work at Museum of Youth Culture, as I am able to access their archive which broadens my contextual knowledge around my art practice. Whilst gifting me the experience within contemporary museology and allowing me to form professional networks amongst likeminded creatives.

My ultimate plan after University is to make a career as an artist. However, I do realise I will need a studio to make that possible as my work tends to vary between media and scale. I have began applying for some paid opportunities but sadly have been rejected. However, its process has taught me that I still need to be adaptable, so continuing my part time work at the NHS will help me provide for my practice and still be able to live and afford my studio. In regards to my studio, I will need one closer to home as it will give me the freedom to commute to without having to travel too far. However, at the moment the results are limited which is concerning for me as their mainly based within the city and can be expensive. So, I'm having to consider other alternatives at the moment until I'm in a better financial situation. I have done this by applying for an art residency within Birmingham which if I am selected it will provide me an art space to work in for the time being.

However, I realise I'm not very confident with woodwork. As we sadly haven't had much opportunity at university with the absence of the technician. So, I have applied for a 10 week in D.I.Y at Solihull college.
