John Openshaw went to Sherlock Holmes after his uncle Elias Openshaw received a letter with writing saying "KKK" and having 5 orange pips in it. Elias later seen face down dead in a swimming pool after receiving this letter. The house that Elias was living in was passed to his brother Joseph. Joseph later received a letter with the same things that Elias had and after he was coming back from a trip he had fallen and hit his head and shattered his skull and died. Sherlock knew he had to do something about this. Holmes traced the letters back to someone on a ship. They found this guy James Calhoun that was the Captain of the ship Lone Star. After John had sent the letter to the captain, John fell into the water. Sherlock Holmes came to the conclusion that these letter and orange pips were warning signs or death threats to the people that died.

The only suspect, in this case, is James Calhoun. The motive of this crime is he was seeking revenge on the family of Elias Openshaw. He had the chance to commit the crime since he wasn't close to the family so he did it. He was able to commit these crimes because he was on a ship and sending the letters in itself was bad luck so just sending them to the Openshaw's was him being able to commit it.

Evidence

There was only one big piece of evidence that I think was a really big part. Basically, the three people that died were John Openshaw, Elias Openshaw, and Joseph Openshaw. These are the three people that got the letter saying "KKK the five orange pips" and they all have the same last name so you can assume that they are all family maybe the person sending the letters had something against them. This is evidence to me because once Sherlock found one of these letters he used it to track down and find who was originally sending the letters his name was James Calhoun he was the captain of a ship named the lone star. Sherlock made up one of the same kind of letter and sent one to James but the ship wrecked before the letter got to him.

Bri: My favorite part of the five orange pips was when they tracked down and found out who the person was that was sending the letters and decided to send him a letter back. My least favorite part of the five orange pips was either when the letter didn't reach the ship because it wreaked or when John fell into the river.
Kerra: My favorite part of the story was when Sherlock and John were trying to find out who did it and sent the letter to James Calhoun. What I didn't like was that James died before he could ever receive the letter.
Kimberlynn: My favorite part of the Five Orange Pips is when the people received the seeds in the mail because nobody knew what it meant so it was a mystery and didn't know what was going to happen next
My least favorite part was when Joseph was found dead, having fallen and shattered his skull in a chalk pit while visiting a friend.
