The cheese sandwich will go into the mouth and this will be its first stage of digestion. When the sandwich is put into the mouth, the salivary glands moisturize it in enzymes which help break down the food. The teeth will chew the food up, which also helps break the sandwich up. The sandwich is then swallowed and moves on to the next stage of digestion.

The Small Intestine

The food bolus will make its way to the small intestine. First, the food bolus will travel through the duodenum (the shortest section of the small intestine) where it will be broken down even more by enzymes. After that, it will enter the section of the jejunum. The jejunum is much like the duodenum but has many of its own functions as well. It consists of projections called villi, which help expand the surface area of the intestine. It also absorbs and transports the nutrients in the cheese sandwich (carbohydrates and proteins). The ileum is the last section of the small intestine and it also includes villi. It also absorbs anything that the jejunum left, such as bile salts. In this last section of the small intestine, the food bolus is broken up and passed to the next stage of digestion.

The large intestine is received whatever is left over after being passed through the small intestine; it is the leftover waste that the large intestine has to deal with. This waste, once known as the cheese sandwich, is passed through the large intestine much like the way the food was passed through the esophagus - the help from peristalsis. The waste enters the cecum, which is connected to the ileum. It then travels upward in the ascending colon, crossways through the transverse colon, downwards through the descending colon, and finally stored in the sigmoid colon where it waits to be released through the next stage of digestion.
