It brought the characters a feeling of freedom and the bonfires were a safe space for them.

I think building a fire represents starting a new life for Junko and Miyake. Both characters have left their home because of problems and have tried to escape them. Every time they build a fire they use new logs and newspapers to start it. Both characters left their families behind. The materials used can represent different and new ideas to start fresh. These can represent a new home, a new environment/culture, and new friends.

I believe that the global issues that are presented with this text are the usability of life and mental health. I think this because while reading this story it is shown how there were two characters that had family issues. For example, Junko's mom left her and she hardly sees her dad, showing how her life is usable because she lives with Keisuke. Next, Miyake had a wife and kids but he left them. To add, mental health was also presented, Miyake had bad dreams and couldn't get rid of them. I believe these are some global issues that are presented in this text.

I think building the fire represents having a good support system. When Miyake is creating the fire hes very articulate and makes sure it has a good base. I think it represents what both characters are missing from their life. Since they cut ties with their family and left they don't have that meaningful family relationship. Its showing us how its needed in both of their lives. And this becomes more appearent throughout the story.

The fire reassured them that they would be okay alone, they could provide their own reassurance and warmth just like a fire. As they both left home and are now alone times can get hard and scary not knowing if it'll turn out okay, but the free fire becoming beautiful and big shows them that they can do it too. The fire left them to think about everything going on in life, thinking how this is their new life.

I think that Junko was trying to leave a life that she doesn't want. The way Murakami describes Junko's life makes it seem like she hates it, and seems that she does not want to live a life that others control. Junko does not want anyone to tell her what to do, like when she has to go to school. Junko's father seems to be very distant when Junko started to become a woman. I think that Junko was successful in leaving that life behind because she seems to be generally happy with Keisuke and Miyake.

I believe that the building of the fire represents Junko and Miyake's coping with their trauma. They both are seen to have a complicated past. First, Junko wouldn't see her dad because he started treating her differently and her mom left her. Second, Miyake doesn't see his kids or wife because he left. So I believe its an escape from the past.

Mostly Miyake had talked about his family and how he had left them back in Kobe. Junko had just cried about how she felt empty and they were sitting around the fire while she was crying hugging Miyake. They end with Junko falling sleep and Miyake hugging her saying that they would both end it together because they are both tired and empty. I think she find comfort in him because hes an older figure and she has no parental figure and i feel like he will keep going back to her as well because he doesn't want to make the same mistakes.

I believe the global issues presented in this text were regret, mental health, and relationships. In the story I noticed that even though Miyake and Junko had escaped their old lives, they still were not happy in their new town. When Junko asked Miyake about is life before, he did not really want to talk about it, meaning there was something about his past he wanted to hide. Near the end of the story, Junko was mentally unstable. She was talking about her wanting to die and Miyake agreed with her and said they would die together. Both characters were mentally unstable because of their past and it is noticed at the end of the story. We learn about Junko's family relationships, romantic relationships, and friendly relationships, and how they differ. She used to have a good relationship with her family, but when Junko matured, her father barely spoke to her. Junko is dating Keisuke, but she doen't seem very interested in him, and is more interested in Miyake, who is her friend.

Junko was definitely trying to escape from her dad because her dad made her feel like she was less. Throughout the story, it mentions how her father started to treat her differently as was becoming a woman; meaning that she wasn't really comfortable with her dad and they didn't have a good father-daughter relationship. Junko wasn't so successful because although she got to be herself and be able to express what she felt, the story goes on to explain how Junko felt empty and lonely. Junko wasn't successful in finding happiness and being mentally-stable.

Junko was never a troubled kid. She never liked school and she had always had a great relationship with her father. But as time passed by she began to get older and older and develop more. As she slowly became a woman her relationship with her father became distant. So much so that she couldn't take it any more and left. I believe she left to find some sort of father figure to recuperate the bond she had with her father. She believes she will find that in Miyake.

They both open up especially Junko about everything and how she doesn't feel she'll be okay. I believe Junko and Miyake will grow some type of bond together. But he never showed up to his classes and joined a band. He's dating a younger girl and lives with her in an apartment. Keisuke lives off of his parents'money depending on them, and spends most of his time on his band. This shows he's a very carefree person.

This story suggests that the thought of death can happen to anybody. The thought of death didn't come to mind with Junko, but she was thinking about it subconsciously. When she was told to describe a story for summer, she said that the man really wanted to die. She didn't know why she thought that but she did. Miyake doesn't have a reason to fear his dream but he does. Keisuke lives his life like he wants, he could've taken over his family's sweet shop but decides not to. He could've gone to his college classes but decided not to. In Japan especially people don't take in mind their mental state which can lead to many negative effects.

The story suggest that death can connect to things in unexpected ways. In the story, Miyake gives an example of a guy thinking he would die from downing but he didn't. Instead, he died for drug and alcohol abuse. He connected the two deaths by saying that the man did die from drowning but he drowned in a different way, he drowned from the emotions he had inside him and committed suicide because of it. The two deaths were different but drowning was symbolic to the way he died of alcohol abuse. The same thing goes for Miyake's death, he said that he would die from being trapped in a refrigerator, in the cold, dark, and alone. At the end of the story, he could have died in similar circumstances, in the cold and dark at the beach.

The global issue presented in the text is how people deal with depression. Junko and Miyake both seem to have depression in the story, Junko explains how she feels empty and lifeless which Miyake said he related to. They have a lot going on in their life that we do not know about which causes us to only learn about what is presented. Both Miyake and Junko's families are absent from their lives, they don't talk about their families but it seems like they have some sort of trauma towards them. When Junko said that she couldn't take it anymore, Miyake comforted and stood by her.

They were running away from their past, from their traumas, from all their issues, for Miyake even his family who he is separated from. We do not know why Miyake is without his family but we know both characters are alone separated from their families. Miyake also states that the type of bonfires that he creates releases trapped feelings that one has. This is shown through the story as both Junko and Miyake start sharing their thoughts on how they are trapped and living as if they are empty inside. In the presence of this fire, they both cry and share feelings bottled up inside of them.

Based on context evidence given on Junko's home life she left home because of her father, and a shift in his view of her from being his little girl to being a woman. She must have felt, helpless, and unnoticed, which can be signified in the difference in her grades from middle school to high school. There's a big difference in how she was described as an A+ student in middle school to barely qualifying to enter high school I don't think Junko was successful, in a career or in her escape, because in her conversation with Miyake, we see how she views herself. Unworthy, empty, and unwanted, she escaped her father, left her home, has a new job, a comforting friend they bonded over a fire, and an assumed boyfriend she lives with. However even then she still takes Miyake's joke of ending it together as an actual offer, she doesn't want to live and how Miyake did it whether she wants to or not she's going to wake up after the fire dies because her body's still alive. She escaped, but I think she's still trapped in her past, which shows in how she views herself. She's not triumphant because she still feels the way she would have if she stayed. Of course, this can change and has signs of improving with the development of her friendship with Miyake and his bonfires.

What the story suggests about death is that it's a relief from pain. In the story brought up by Junko, author Jack London, depicts a man lost in the frozen Alaskan territory who has lit a fire to save himself. In the story, Junko believes that despite his efforts to start a fire the man seeks death but hypothermia, is slow to kill him. Giving him no choice but to try for a fire until his last breath. Considering Junko's belief in desiring death it can be assumed that she believes that death is merciful and better than to continue living in a sad, painful memory every day. This is also shown in Miyake's symbolic dream where he dreams of dying through suffocation, dragged in, where no one can hear his cries. Overall the story suggests that death is not something to be feared, and in a way, we predetermined it by constantly thinking and fearing it. Constantly thinking of death, and fearing it will determine how you live your life, and guide the choices you make

Keisuke's philosophy about life can be described in one well-known motto "Yolo". "You only live once". Keisuke parents are respected shop owners of a sweetshop and can be assumed to be doing fairly well in their earnings as Keisuke had the opportunity to go to a private college. However, that was not a very promising future for him, going to school or inheriting his family's simple business, instead, he moved to Ibaraki, to live by the water as a surfer. He enjoys loud rock music, plays the guitar, and even formed a band. He seems reckless, and loud and lives his life the way he wants to. But I have to disagree with his belief system because, in a way, the passage said it best, it's not going to last. He's exploiting the prime of his youth, friends, bonfires, and easygoing lifestyle. However, I think it'll be a joy of his youth and I'd prefer to have worked toward something instead of having fun all the time.

At the end of the story, it is implied that both Miyake and Junko laid in the sand embracing cold death without hesitation anymore. Both characters have an existential crisis regarding their pasts and actions. With Junko crying on the ground, Miyake proposed that they'd both just die together to escape their problems. As the fire dies down, the cold grows larger and the less time they have on this planet.

I think that the bonfire is a symbol of death. This symbol is perceived by everyone in the story differently. This is why when both Junko and Miyake look at the the fire they get reminders of death or it brings out their fears on how they will die.

I noticed that both Junko and Miyake had gotten quite close in this story. I also thought that Junko and her boyfriend weren't good for each other as they both had different beliefs and were vastly different from each other.

The global issue present in this story is the issue of mental health. One example includes Junko crying a sentence “There’s really nothing at all in here, I’m cleaned out. Empty’”. She needed an escape and the bonfires weren’t doing enough to cure this dread she felt in her life. She had family issues; feeling the neglect of her father once she was older and being almost sexualized by him. Miyake had familial issues as well, but these issues formed into dreams rather than personal conflicts. With his dream involving dying in a refrigerator, the hands that dragged him in kept him inside for a long time that it never left his mind. This represents the thought of death keeping you captive and never letting you go; the thought of suicide.

Junko was trying to escape the mental abuse that her father was sort of putting her through. We read that she and her father actually had a good relationship with each other and were seemingly close, but the older she got the more the relationship got strained. When she wasn't respected at home or at school, she felt what she needed to do was leave and try to start a new life. Did this work? No, it did not because at the end of the story she reveals that there is nothing to really feel anymore. All of the bonfires in the world couldn't make her feel content or happy with herself, the damage had already been done and she'd rather die than face the tragedies of life.
