1- Id say my biggest circle of influence is definitely my sports role as leader. This is because in these sports if you don't have someone who leads and dominates the floor as I do you wont be able to score and win games. I'd say I have the least amount of authority in my family as my parents are still the heads of the households so I play a smaller role as a leader for now but more of an follower and influencer.

2- Over the years my biggest change of influence would again have to be in my sports roles. This is because I had to earn the role of being a leader at first I was the one playing my role listening to another leader to now being the one to tell others what to do to help the team succeed.

Originally an immigrant, he has lived in New York for six years and says the city has shaped who he is.

“Living in New York really forces you to step out of your comfort zone. You can walk from SoHo to Chinatown and feel like you have traveled through different worlds.”

College has not been easy. Organic chemistry tested his patience, but Scott learned that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.

“There were more resources than I thought. I just had to take the first step.”

When asked what advice he would give to others, he smiled.

“Do not rush your story. Life is like a machine.

Introduction

The United States government has implemented tariffs as one of its most significant economic policy instruments. The United States government established tariffs to defend domestic industries and create trade alliances and fight against foreign trade practices it deemed unfair. The public discussion about tariffs together with political disputes and academic studies has intensified during the previous decade because of Chinese import tariffs. Tariffs function as sophisticated economic instruments which impact both foreign product prices and domestic production expenses and worldwide distribution networks. The wide-ranging economic effects of tariffs create have made it essential to determine their positive or negative impact on the U.S. economy during rising trade conflicts.

The research investigates U.S. tariff impacts from 2018 through 2024 as the primary focus. The research aims to show how tariffs affect both consumers and businesses while examining their effects on employment rates and inflation levels and worldwide trade connections. The research uses real-world data and academic papers and government records to answer its core question about U.S. tariffs' long-term economic value to the American economy. The research investigates whether U.S. tariffs generate substantial economic advantages for America or create more economic damage than advantages.

The subject matter extends its influence beyond economic evaluation. The implementation of tariffs creates financial impacts on family budgets and small enterprises and generates income for governments while straining international diplomatic relations. The understanding of tariff effects enables voters and consumers and future trade policymakers to make informed decisions about future trade policies.

Existing Scholarship

Research about tariffs existed before 2018 but the number of studies about tariffs exploded when the U.S.-China trade war began in 2018. The current academic research investigates how tariffs affect consumer prices because these effects were not predicted by policymakers. The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) studies demonstrate through their research that American household prices increase more than foreign export prices when tariffs are implemented. Research studies examine how tariffs affect American manufacturing operations. The manufacturing sector faces negative impacts from tariffs which serve as a primary reason for implementing protectionist trade policies. The economic debate continues about how tariffs actually affect domestic manufacturing growth because experts show these trade measures create additional negative effects that extend beyond manufacturing to impact employment in related production sectors.

Academic researchers have studied how tariffs create different problems that affect global supply networks. The world economy depends on complex networks of suppliers and manufacturers which makes tariffs affect both supply chain operations and increase production expenses and extend delivery times for specific products. Research papers demonstrate that US companies relocated their manufacturing operations from China and Vietnam to Mexico and Malaysia but this transition required substantial expensive restructuring of their operations.

The last academic field affected by this influence situation examines how tariffs modify economic relations between major world powers through geopolitical and diplomatic research. The implementation of retaliatory tariffs by opponents leads to decreased economic cooperation and trust which produces incremental impacts on both economic stability and national defense capabilities.

The existing research evidence demonstrates that tariffs operate in a complex manner which exceeds the simplified descriptions made by politicians. Theoretical protection of American interests does not match the actual economic risks that tariffs create according to multiple studies which show these trade measures harm the economy more than they benefit it.

Research Questions

The research investigates these specific questions to create a complete and detailed evaluation.

American tariffs created what effects on consumer expenses and family financial management?

The implementation of tariffs has brought what effects to U.S. manufacturing operations and employment numbers?

The implementation of tariffs has created what effects on American businesses which depend on foreign materials and worldwide supply networks?

The economic results which emerged from tariff policies during 2018 and subsequent years remain unclear.

The current data indicates whether tariffs create economic growth or economic decline for the United States.

The established research questions enable researchers to study tariff effects across both small-scale and large-scale economic systems.

Methodology

The research combines qualitative and quantitative methods which draw from academic and government-backed sources for analysis. The research depends on:

- Peer-reviewed economic studies

- The U.S. Census Bureau together with the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) publish official statistics.

- Economic research institutes distribute their research findings through detailed studies.

- The research draws from news reports and policy documents that cover both domestic and international areas.

The research examines primary themes and empirical results and theoretical models which appear in secondary literature sources. The researchers verified data points from prominent economic researchers to verify consistency and detect any discrepancies. The researchers integrated their findings into a comprehensive discussion which delivered precise and evidence-based solutions to the research questions.

Analysis

Impact on Consumer Prices

The most direct and measurable effect of tariffs on consumers has been the rise of their purchasing expenses. Most economists agree that tariffs drive up import costs which subsequently lead to higher prices for American consumers. The research shows that most tariff-related expenses affect U.S. consumers and businesses instead of foreign exporters. The tariffs function as hidden taxes which American families throughout America must pay from their household budgets.

The US–China tariff period demonstrated how extensive the price increases became for numerous products. The price increases affected electronics together with household items and clothing and appliances and vehicles. The lack of domestic alternatives for these products forced consumers to accept higher prices for their purchases. The price increases from tariffs created an extreme financial burden for families who spend most of their income on products that face tariffs.

The inflation rate increased because tariffs made it costlier for U.S. businesses to produce their goods. A manufacturer who needs to purchase steel or aluminum or microchips or other components at elevated prices must increase their product prices to maintain profitability. The price increases from construction to technology manufacturing to automotive production and home appliances have resulted in higher costs for consumers.

Impact on American Businesses

The implementation of tariffs forced American businesses to change their operations because their supply chains operated across international borders. The additional expenses from buying materials from countries under tariff restrictions became a financial burden for numerous American businesses. The supply networks of small and medium-sized businesses remained insufficient which made them more vulnerable to risks.

The manufacturers together with retailers experienced decreased profit margins and elevated operating expenses and challenges with maintaining market competitive prices. The companies responded to these situations by implementing price increases and staff reductions and delaying their business expansion plans. The companies needed to spend substantial funds for moving their manufacturing operations to areas outside tariff zones. The companies needed to transform their entire business operations because of this requirement.

The implementation of tariffs created new investment decision factors for businesses. The ongoing trade policy uncertainties have led businesses to avoid making substantial capital investments which results in slower economic expansion. The unstable nature of trade relations has become a key factor which restricts business growth and innovation in particular industry segments.

Impact on Employment and Manufacturing

The implementation of tariffs serves as a defense mechanism to protect American workers while attempting to restore domestic manufacturing operations. The statistical data shows that the outcome from these policies was inconsistent at best. The steel and aluminum manufacturers in the United States received benefits from protectionist policies yet their advantages disappeared because other industries that used these materials experienced employment reductions.

The steel industry faces higher production expenses because it needs to purchase expensive materials for its operations. The increased costs from higher prices have forced companies to reduce their workforce and decrease their production output and delay their business expansion plans. Economic models predict that protected industries create fewer than one new job for every position they save because downstream sectors lose multiple positions due to higher production expenses.

Foreign countries implemented counter-tariffs which reduced American agricultural product sales in international markets. The agricultural sector faced declining export numbers which resulted in financial instability for farmers who needed to rely more on government support.

Impact on International Relations and Trade Stability

The United States has established new trade relationships with its essential trading partners through its tariff implementation. The implementation of tariffs against strategic partners and close allies resulted in diplomatic relationship deterioration. The United States tariffs imposed on China resulted in China imposing substantial tariffs on American exported products. The continuous exchange of trade restrictions between countries resulted in extended trade discussions and demonstrated an increasing economic rivalry between nations.

Multiple nations have chosen to establish trading partnerships with countries that compete against the US for global market dominance. The US trade conflicts have motivated countries to reduce their economic dependence on the United States by expanding their supply networks which resulted in permanent changes to international trade patterns.

Long-Term Economic Impact

The future economic effects of tariffs continue to generate disagreement among experts yet multiple distinct patterns have emerged. The implementation of tariffs has resulted in higher prices and disrupted supply networks and reduced business investments because of market unpredictability. The protection of specific business sectors from competition has not prevented the entire economic system from facing increased expenses which consumers and workers and businesses must now bear.

Research indicates that tariffs have accelerated Chinese production relocation yet the evidence shows this does not result in manufacturing facilities returning to American soil. The majority of manufacturing operations relocate to countries which offer lower labor expenses. The evidence shows that tariffs have influenced global manufacturing locations but they have not triggered substantial manufacturing sector growth in the United States.

Findings and Discussion

The research findings demonstrate that tariffs have created extensive economic effects which extend across the entire U.S. economy. The evidence demonstrates that tariffs lead to higher consumer expenses and increased production expenses for American businesses and create supply chain instabilities and produce conflicting results for manufacturing employment and trigger international trade retaliation and create enduring economic instability.

Most academic and economic research indicates that tariffs create more economic expenses than advantages despite political claims that tariffs benefit domestic industries and workers. The short-term defensive benefits provided to specific industries proved insufficient to counteract the extensive economic disruptions which affected numerous businesses and their employees.

Tariffs function independently as economic growth promoters but they do not create lasting domestic economic expansion. Tariffs function as temporary protective measures but they fail to drive fundamental economic transformation when businesses lack access to infrastructure funding and innovation support and workforce development and industrial modernization programs.

Conclusion

The United States continues to use tariffs as its most influential yet contentious monetary policy tool. The research demonstrates that tariffs serve two main purposes of protecting domestic industries and negotiating with foreign nations yet their actual economic impact produces negative results for their intended goals. The implementation of tariffs through cost increases and supply chain disruptions and international trade conflicts leads to their indirect effects.

Citations

Bown, Chad P., and Douglas A.

For my map I chose to base it off of The game fortnite and its game arena modes map. Within the map I chose the colors blue, red, green, orange, and green as well as purple each signifying a different part of my experience for my first semester here at St johns. For example in red I marked some challenges I had faced as a student such as Final exams now but also key assignments I had to complete such as my microeconomics group presentation, I also included group work and socializing with new people for in class assignments in this class. For the color green I decided to mark things I did on my own and felt proud of such as being selected as the freshman representative of the biggest business club here at St. Johns ( FMA) additionally being the first ever freshman to work into the on campus business incubator (The VIC within Tobin). For the color orange I had chose things I was happy to be apart of and take part in such as intramural soccer which is one of many sports offered here, and though my team didn't win #1 overall team I was glad to meet new people and socialize with other soccer enthusiasts. Blue is just water and dead space within the islands (key moments within my semester) similar to within the game doesn't have a specific meaning behind it. Last but not least the color purple and the circle in the middle that stretches to all parts of the map represents the end of the semester and how I went through a bunch of different things but its now in the past and now I'm here at the middle which is the finals season which is similar to the game in which you have to move past what you do at the start of the game and you run to the middle away from the storm as you are fighting for your life to be the final victor.
