Author and screenwriter Gerald Di Pego may not be a household name, but he's maintained a surprisingly healthy career penning novels, original screenplays, and adaptations for more than forty years. His latest original, "Words and Pictures," which hits theaters Friday, May 23, puts his passion for writing center stage, as two prep-school teachers (Juliette Binoche and Clive Owen) concoct an art-vs.-words debate to energize their students, falling for each other in the process. Word & Film recently spoke to Di Pego about how he used the Honors English professor played by Owen as a mouthpiece for his own passion for language.

WORD & FILM: From the evidence of the film, clearly you have some thoughts on the negative impact technology is having on our younger generations.

GERALD Di PEGO: Yeah. At the same time, I don't want to sound like an old fart who says, "the old ways are the good ways," because the onrush of technologies is not something you can stop. I always hope there'll be a place for the treasurers of language to find a space, a place where there are still books to leaf through, to pick up and carry around. It's an ancient thing, and I just don't want to see it go away. I'm not a diehard about it. But I do think that if people don't go beyond the computer, they're going to leave some richness behind.

W&F: What sparked this war of words vs. art in you? Was there a conversation or incident from your personal life?

GD: No, this is one of my older ideas that I kept throwing notes into the file for decades. Most of my films, when you knock them way down, are about the struggle between isolation and connection. Connection is scary to people. I know this struggle. I was very shy and sometimes during my life felt self-conscious. That struggle of connection between those two characters is kind of the rock. But I wanted to put them in a world that challenged me. I wanted to be challenged with language. Most of the characters I've written in my films are not necessarily highly educated people, and I wanted to push my way up into that. Part of it was the joy of those movies of the '30s and '40s, where there was banter and wit. I wanted to see if I could do that. It made sense that he was an English teacher who loves language, worships language.

W&F: You give him a lot of great lines, but I think my favorite is: "Words are your gods. And somebody has insulted your religion." Which writers have been your spiritual guides?

GD: First of all, I was a high school English teacher. So I lived it for a while, way back in my twenties. When it comes time for Jack to quote people that he's read to his class, I, Jerry, get to find my favorite quotes! So it was so much fun for me to use Ian McEwan, Updike, andJeanette Winterson. There are some wonderful image-makers out there. Nikos Kazantzakis. At the same time, when I was thirteen or so, I remember walking out of the theater after seeing "On the Waterfront" feeling like a different person. That movie just shook me and made me want to be somebody that could tell stories.

W&F: You wrote the central poem upon which the plot turns, right? How was that experience?

GD: Yes. I've never tried to publish my poetry, but I do love the challenge of the form. I always had in the script a piece of a Mary Oliver poem. We kept trying to get her to give us a release on using it. It got to be late in the game when [director] Fred Schepisi and Curtis [Burch], the producer, turned to me and said, "Jerry, you've gotta write a poem." [laughs] Luckily, inspiration hit me. But boy, Mary Oliver is a tough act [to follow]. At first, Juliette was hesitant because she loved that Mary Oliver passage. And then she came to me later and said, "I read it again. I love it." So that made me feel good.

W&F: You've had at least a dozen adaptations produced as features for TV and film. What was the hardest one to make work, and why?

GD: When I read the manuscript of Message in a Bottle I thought, I don't want to use any of this dialogue and want them to have different work. Can I pick these people up and place them in at least a slightly different context? I had to know how much freedom I had before I could say yes to that assignment. It's always hard. I prefer original screenplays. I love to dream it up and put it down -- so it all comes from me.
