(Laras, Erica, Nathania)
His great grandpa, Yuan Shikai, was the first President of the Republic of China and also a Warlord. His father, the personal physician of Mau Zedong, became a political prisoner in Indonesia when he came there.
This may have impacted his life as an activist involved in many types of activism about changing the world which almost convinced him to quit poetry because he thought "poetry couldn't 'do it'. It couldn't change the world, or something like that" (Li-Young Lee). But he then concluded that activism without poetry is ego-driven, and so he shows his ideas to change the world through poems.
