His great grandpa, Yuan Shikai, was the first President of the Republic of China and also a Warlord. His father, the personal physician of Mau Zedong, became a political prisoner in Indonesia when he came there. 
This may have impacted his life as an activist involved in many types of activism about changing the world which almost convinced him to quit poetry because he thought "poetry couldn't 'do it'. It couldn't change the world, or something like that" (Li-Young Lee). His poetry is known for his use of silence and personal experience or memories. Due to his dramatic childhood, Lee's poems often focus on the themes of alienation and identity. He used many of his poems as a way to pass on stories.

- there are references of his life (even his wife in the poem "Persimmons") and are told in story-like manner.

- He also has references to racism and real world problems

conclusion:
- his poetry is heavily influenced by his life, family and experiences, but he writes a lot of very trivial and mundane subjects that are turned beautiful.
