Analysis: The fact that he remembers the times from when he came into the room during his father's work time to ask questions as well as remembering moments where he received advice form his father plays a huge role in determining that he remembers his father very well. It is said in the passage that his father always has the answers to questions and was wise in giving advice such as telling him how to ask for ice cream to his mother. Analysis: Through these quotes we see how the boy is trying to maintain his father's picture in his mind. Every aspect, which included how his shoes smelled. He didn't want to forget. After a while they smelled like nothing and he missed his father's scent when attempting to get a snippet of aroma out of his fathers shoes by rubbing his fingers on the shoes and then smelling his fingers. Also, the boy wonders if the conditions where his father is held are similar to his. This is seen as the boy wonders what his father was doing at the moment and asks himself if there is any toothpaste over at Lords-burg, where his father was at. He then asks if people over at Lords-burg can see the 'same moon' as where he was and so this contributes to the whole wanting-to-know-his-father's-conditions because it is interpreted as is the environment the same over there? Do they treat people any differently? Analysis: The boy strongly believed his father will come to him and so he starts imagining his father's presentation or 'heroic' entrance. The boy thinks his entrance would indicate a miracle that had happened as he relates him as if he was Jesus. His strong belief of his father coming to him creates this sense of confidence within the boy and he starts putting the 'future' moment in terms of what he wants it to be. He starts imagining that they'll talk 'side by side' and the moon will be 'bright' and 'round.' This shows his stubbornness in keeping this whole expectation of his father's presentation of being wonderful. He imagines what he wants to happen.

The boy remembers his father's wise answers, his father's aroma, and pictured what his father would say once they met again; yet the aspects in regards of what he wore was had the boy thinking the most about. Throughout his transition to a new settlement, he gets flashbacks on what his father wore in a regular day. The boy constantly thinks about the black shoes his father used to wear. This is seen throughout the whole chapter of When the Emperor Was Divine. He thinks of people looking like his father for wearing the same shoes and at one point yelled his name, but then his sister told him to stop and that they had already been over that.
