I´ve empathized today a little, how escaped people feel who are in another country where they don´t understand and speak the language. I will only say that I can imagine now by my own experience that it is very exhausting, only the few hours. All other traumatic experiences I fortunately don´t have.

The people in the school were so friendly and kind and it was really nice to observe how lessons are going in Guadeloupe and being part of it for some time. I´ve some new ideas what I can do with my pupils so that they will get similar experiences about their culture and nearby landscape.

My quote of the day is: "Never go out for a trip without having breakfast!"

We spend the day at Kontakaz together with pupils. Today I've learned (once again) that it is important to experience new things and not only read about it. Yesterday I read the text about Kontakaz but i couldn't really imagine what it is about. The performance of the teacher impressed me and the fact that the pupils kept the attention till the end is a result of it (in my opinion).
My quote of the day: "Always take emergency-biscuits with you!"

Today I learnt how great learning is if you see, feel, touch and sing. The enthusiasm, the discipline and joy of the pupils impressed me. The insight into the creole music, theatre and language showed me how proud the people here are of their own tradition and culture. It is a very valuable treasure that must be kept and can only be delivered by compassionate teachers. Teachers like we have met today, teachers who love what they are doing.

The walk through the rainforest and the diversity of nature with all the beautiful plants and fruits taught me how sensitive and vulnerable nature is and it has to be kept. Even the knowledge about it is very valuable and should be part of every curriculum.

Quote of the day: Knowledge about the environment leads to knowledge about yourself

Diversity is even seen in the plants that surround us, when we think we are looking at something local and find that its origin is on the other side of the planet we get surprised.
On the other hand there is sometings which transcends any geographical or cultural barrier and that is the smile of a child.
As a Portuguese singer says "é mais aquilo que nos une que aquilo que nos separa" (it is more what unites us than what separates us)

Nature shapes our daily life and our culture, but we only understand it if we are to think about it and if we know some of our past. Many time our past is more than our history, it incorporates a lot of unwritten knowledge. The oral tradition is powerful and has to be passed on, just as we have seen today: through showing and telling, through singing and doing. Children learn easily and their laughter is one of the reasons why I teach.

Unfortunately, I got a really bad cold and was not able to attend the session.
But my colleagues told me that it was interesting how different the classes were compared to what we are used to - but filled with music, joy and laughter.

In the the booklet, it is made quite clear that music is a great part of culture. Maybe here in Guadeloupe with its history it is more important than in Germany. Music is not only a way to express yourself - it is also a link to our origins. During my work with refugee classes I noticed that in playing their music they were able to create a bit of home abroad.
