But, some lived long enough to get to the doctors. The medical care wasn't that great. Medical knowledge was limited. There was poor hygiene and doctors would wipe their tools and hands on their blood caked shirts. Amputation occurred many times due to bones shattering. They thought amputation was the best way. So soldiers would get arms, legs, feet, and hands amputated. Soldiers would also write love letters to their loved ones, played cards, went swimming, hunted, fished, played baseball, and wrestled. Soldiers even performed magic shows, skits, and plays. Music played a special part in their lives as well. When Union and Confederate forces were camped near each other troops from both armies sometimes even joined in songs together, their voices echoing across the distance between their camps. But in many cases this was unfair, unright, and unequal. The African American soldiers were purposely given the simpler jobs. They had also been mistreated and racially profiled numerous times. Their pay was also unequal, African Americans had been payed $10 an hour while the white soldiers were payed $13 an hour. Luckily the African soldiers stood up to this and held protests and refused pay. So she and many other women became nurses and tended to the wounded soldiers. Due to all the brave nurses the wounded soldiers were able to heal and continue fighting.
