I love the noise and the constant agitation of the big cities. The continuous movement forces the observation of customs. The thief, for example, when he sees all human activity, thinks involuntarily that he is a scoundrel, and this cheerful image in movement can improve his decaying and ruined nature. The Bohemian feels perhaps more modest and thoughtful when he sees all the productive forces, and the devotee possibly says to himself, when he is struck by the docility of the masses, who is no more than a miserable, stupid and vain fellow, Who only knows how to boast with pride. Great cities teach, educate, and not with stolen doctrines of books. There is nothing academic here, which is flattering, because accumulated knowledge robs us of courage.
And then there is so much here that encourages, sustains and helps. We almost could not say it. It is so difficult to give a living expression to what is refined and good. We thank our modest lives, we always feel a little grateful when we are pushed, when we are in a hurry. Who has time to squander does not know what time means, is by nature ungrateful. In big cities, every young man knows the value of time, and no one wants to waste his time. And all that is in this dream, of painting and poetry! The people pass in a hurry and push us. Now this has a meaning, it excites, it puts the spirit into living movement. When we hesitate for a moment, hundreds, hundreds of things have already passed us by the head and the eyes, and we then clearly perceive how we are idlers and madrassas. Everyone is in a hurry here because everyone thinks at every moment that it would be good to fight for something and get it. Life gains a magnificent breath. The wounds and pains are deeper, the joy of joy is more joyful and lasting than in other places, for those who are happy here think they have always deserved it hard and just for the work and the fatigues.
