         <description><![CDATA[<div>June 28th, 1914: &nbsp;<br>Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb, killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand. After the assassination Anti-serb protests occurred throughout Austria-Hungary. One month later, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. This sets the triple alliance (Austria-Hungary, Germany, Italy) against Serbias alliances in the Triple entente (Russia, France, Britain). This pushes World War 1 into motion.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

The purpose of the conference was to negotiate peace treaties to formally end the war and establish order in Europe. The conference was attended by leaders from United States, Britain, France, Italy. 5 Treaties made up the Peace of Paris -- one each with Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey. Of the 5, the Treaty of Versailles with Germany was signed on June 28th.</div>]]></description>

Initially, the gas used was chlorine, which caused respiratory distress and was deadly in high concentrations. Later, more toxic gases like phosgene and mustard gas were developed and used by both sides. Poison gas caused widespread horror and outrage, and its use was widely condemned, though it continued to be used in subsequent conflicts.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>
