I chose a Spanish Dictionary as a language item in order to survive Florida. Let's be real, Florida is highly populated with Hispanic people. It's pretty useful to know Spanish in Florida in order to communicate with Spanish speakers that may not know English.

It saves you from wasting more money on drinks as you travel Florida. It is also useful for exercising in Florida.

I chose a cellphone as an essential item to have in the survival kit. In Florida it can be pretty hectic figuring out where to go and how to get there. A cellphone has many advantages to that such as GPS. You can also easily google search where to go around Florida whether it's to go visit an area or try something new. Florida's weather is also highly unpredictable so it's great to check the weather. Basically a phone can provide a lot of support for an every day use when living in Florida.

Thalia Fortich 1/20/17 Modern Day Philosophers

Kendrick Lamar is a rapper of great influence in our modern day. I consider Kendrick to be a modern day philosopher because he is able to analyze social issues, question them, and simply manifests them into his literature and art. "To Pimp A Butterfly" album that was released back in 2015 more importantly addressed big issues such as stereotypes placed on African Americans and police brutality. An important track to note would be "The Blacker The Berry." The most powerful lyrics to me is when Lamar speaks, "You hate me don't you? You hate my people; your plan is to terminate my culture." The ever growing issue of racial discrimination is what Lamar targets the most. I applaud and look up to Kendrick not being afraid to not only speak about these issues but to question them as well. I especially feel that he is a modern day philosopher because he is not afraid to question what society deems ethical. He makes it clear to listeners that we do have problems but we're a part of it because we let these problems go unaddressed. Whether it is issues on violence, politics, discrimination, morals, whatever it may be; Kendrick dares to question why things are the way they are. I feel he most relates to Aristotle because Aristotle focused much on ethics as well. (For example - Aristotelian ethics.) Artistotle even covers that "Moral virtue cannot be achieved abstractly- it requires moral action in a social environment." (Cliffnotes quote on Aristotle's Ethical Philosophy) Which relates back to Lamar's way of thinking that there needs to be a take for action on these issues. Overall, philosophy is the search for a deeper meaning, to question and understand the reasoning behind things. I believe philosophy has greatly impacted modern thinking due to fact that people are not afraid to voice their opinions. To not be afraid to question. To look for logic and reasoning. It is now easier, more than ever, to be able to start a movement in something you believe in. I feel that it is philosophy that has brought deeper meaning to how we address things.

Thalia Fortich 1/30/17 American Dream

Do you think the American Dream can happen in other geographic locations besides the United States?

The American Dream is something that American's believe to be an ideal lifestyle. I believe other geographic locations besides the United States have their own forms of the "American Dream" for their country. Although what sets the US a part from other locations is that our "Dream" is more widely known. I believe third world countries have much bigger dreams than ours in reality. For Americans we tend to focus on bettering the type of life we want to live. Other countries (such as third-world countries) face the fact that they're falling behind economically and socially. More importantly many of them face warfare that still goes on within their country. I believe these type of countries have a bigger dream to come out from these issues. For example, Africa is a continent that has many countries within it that face similar issues that are politically, socially, and economically driven. They still deal with warfare and face high sex trafficking issues in their own country. I feel that their form of an "American Dream" would be to reform themselves to reach economic success. Not only would they feel the need to strive for economic success but to be able to come to resolutions to help with the serious problems Africa faces.

Do you find any of the questions problematic or confusing on the US Census?

A question I find very problematic with the US Census is question 7. There are many specific things that the question looks into such as considering yourself as chicano or latino. The question itself just seems confusing for someone that is spanish and may not recognize the terms. I find it uneccessary that the question even gives the option to put "No, not Spanish./Hispanic/Latino". If you're not spanish move on (skip) from that question and answer number 8 which asks of different races such as white, african american, american native, ETC. If I was to reword the question it would definitely be number 7. My question would state "Is Person 1 Spanish/Hispanic/Latino. If yes print the race in the textbox provided."
