The author examines how people in Riace interact with refugees and their whole idea about the local identity of hospitality towards them. The author states that he analysed how involved the locals are in the whole scheme and how they find ways to support the refugees. His argument also touches upon some challenges that can come in the way but also analyses some solutions found by locals in order to maintain a local identity that promotes a welcoming attitude towards refugees.

It is also said that this identity can differ, and have a prosocial effect as well. Communities that define themselves in terms of hospitality and community can act that way.

Challenge the notion that strong local identity does not necessarily always intertwine with refugee reception but rather stimulates it. Uses the case study of Riace, Italy to showcase how this can be the case. It specifically focuses on the values and norms of the community, notably hospitality, how it shapes their social group identity and how it influences the reception of refugees. They also examine how their social identity is enforced, in terms of both the community and the leader of the community and how it ultimately impacts their perception and acceptance of refugees.

Looking through the social identity perspective, this paper looks at how a strong local identity is forged, through policies, community leaders and the influx and efflux of immigrants/refugees. The author talks about the juggling act for governments in terms of managing anti immigration attitudes that lead to stricter policies while also welcoming and accommodating refugees within the context of Riace, where Driel and Verkuyten conducted this research, in Southern Italy.

The reading is about a small town in southern Italy called Riace and how they react to refugees coming to their town. They give help and support to them and make them feel welcome. The writer talks about fieldwork they carried out in the small town to see first hand how they react to newcomers. They found that it was easy to find out information as everyone in the town were very welcoming and were happy to get well acquainted. The reading also goes on to talk about the history of the town and how they became to be so accepting.

I believe the writers make a strong point against the idea that people don’t have to be so cold and unwelcoming to refugees. This small town in southern Italy is a great example of how others can be helpful and hospitable towards newcomers and don’t need to be hostile towards refugees coming to be apart of their community.

The reading does bring up interesting arguments relating to social identity and values, allows acceptance of ‘outsiders’ and sort of blurs the line between ‘us and them’. However, resources needed to further their programs can essentially go back to bigger global players. They could provide further assistance, yet they don’t really acknowledge it nor support refugees the same way Riace does. Additionally, Nations who also have a long history of migration don't treat it the same way as the society in Riace does. So the following should be considered: can the case of Riace be a possible blueprint for larger societies in terms of reception for refugees?

The authors stress on the work the community has to do to welcome newcomers but perhaps the focus should’ve been on the role the community leaders and politicians can play in influencing the public. Another thought is about the government’s initiative in creating these structures that provide jobs to locals within the refugee ecosystems, how it could be done in a way to discourage locals faking their way to become part of the ecosystem, even if they don’t really care to welcome refugees.
