Summary of the Current Innovation

In neurological intensive care units, providers are often receiving information from many different sources. Moberg has created a device that will allow providers to simultaneously monitor critical neurological indicators from a single device. Necessary neurological indicators may include intracranial pressure, brain tissue oxygen, cerebral blood flow, cerebral micro dialysis, and continuous surface or intracranial electroencephalography. Moberg Component Neuromonitoring System (CNS) is a patient monitor that allows the connectivity of numerous external medical devices. This innovation allows for data collection, data storage, and analysis of physiological variables in real time. The display can also display graphical trends, which healthcare providers frequently depend on for individualized care. The device allows users to indicate significant events such as medication administration, various nursing interventions (suctioning, repositioning, chest physiotherapy). Providers are able to choose two dependent variables to compare specific neurological indicators as appropriate.

As a critical care nurse, device integration is very intriguing. Although I do not work in a specialty neurologic ICU, I can see the benefits of allowing healthcare providers the ability to view various important indicators on one screen. The Moberg CNS would allow providers to easily monitor and compare trends which is very important in critically ill patients. The central monitor would reduce the need to recall data from various devices and combine the information manually. The devices’ positive attributes outweigh the cons. The cons are issues that are commonly encountered with critical care equipment. These barriers are overcome as the benefits provided by this type of equipment greatly improve patient care.
