I chose to work with brown/tan paper to experiment with the look that colored pencil can emit from the added contrast. The subject (girl and jellyfish) were layered with many different colors to achieve the smooth texture. I also used contrasting colors of orange and blue to emphasize the vibrancy of both of the subjects. The walls and tentacle posts are meant to be one of the next things that the eye focuses on with focus on repetition of colors. I used black paper this time to challenge myself in changing my perspective from what I know of white to dark. I also worked with texture a lot within the technique in the green subjects face and the two sets of brown hair. I wanted the black paper to aid in the vibrancy of colors so I used very bright and neon-like colors for the main subjects. In this project, my main focus was exploring line in its pressure and ways to form edges, curves, and shapes. At first, I thought this was going to go nowhere but I ended up really enjoying the creations of neutral grayish purples that I was able to achieve with the blending of my limited palette. I am really happy with how I achieved his expression in this work. Most of my projects this semester were done using colored pencil. My knowledge of colored pencil was not very high going into this semester so getting to explore more of the possiblities in textures and shading. It sounds odd but I think art can be a mental game with an artist. I am highly judgmental and a harsh critic to my work. I feel the need to pick at every single detail and action that goes into my work. In regard to this semester, I think that I really grew away from that in a positive way. For example, as I continued to work with colored pencil I began to trust that I have the "talent" to work with it and not worry that it will look "bad" per say. I have always been very observant and precise to what I apply to my work. Whether it is from the technique or amount of shading I apply. In the last watercolor project that I did I took all of the accidental globs of paint or too much water into positive consideration and used those mistakes to form the end result. My art itself has been praised highly by people in in life. It has been suggested to me to put my work up in coffee shops or stores and see if I can acquire a profit from them.
