The treaty brought a lot of foreign money to Japan. This money disturbed Japan's currency. It also sparked other nations interest in Japan. Great Britain, France, and Russia signed unequal treaties with Japan that grant
ed more rights to foreigners than Japan. This angered the Japenese and led to the overthrow of the shogun.

This picture shows commodore Perry and his fleet going into the Tokyo Bay to get the treaty signed. This was the first time foreign ships were allowed in a port of Japan. The american ships are much larger because they are more powerful than the little Japan ships.

For years starting in 1603 to the 1800's Japan had limited contact with the "outside world", meaning they were not allowed to talk or trade with other countries. The Europeans and Americans were dissapointed with this and wanted to get in contact with Japan for trading. Commodore Matthew Perry was sent to Japan in 13 warships. This act was to convince Japan to be in contact with others by signing the "Treaty of Kanagawa" in 1854.

This picture is showing Commodore Matthew Perry arriving with his warships in Japan in 1853 to propose the "Treaty of Kanagawa" to Japan. Once they see the huge warship from America they start to reconsider industrializing since their boats are nothing compared to the huge warship.

In Tokyo, Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry, representing the U.S. government, signed the Treaty of Kanagawa with the Japanese government, opening the ports of Shimoda and Hakodate. The reason Perry signed the Treaty of Kanagawa was to open trade with Japan and the United States. PIC: Matthew Perry returned to Japan to finish the treaty and open the ports.
