Info 287-10: Rewriting Websites by Noell Ahern

Looking online, I have selected three websites- library and others -who need to be rewritten. In contrast, I have also selected to websites or webpages that are well written.

As my primary focus and career pathway is youth services within the library, I have chosen to focus primarily of sections within library websites that serve children and teens but may also be useful to parents and teachers as well.

What is well written about this page:
- Encourages further use:
   - Plenty of information/options within College and Career Resources:
      1. College and Career (proper)
      2. Workshops
      3. Websites
      4. Career Conversation Podcasts
   - marketed successfully to site visitors (i.e. teens)
   - accessible to all
- Easily identifiable as a library page
- Self explanatory of who the audience is/user community
- Colorful and warm; visually stunning

What needs revision/rewriting:
- While there are links offered to get testing resources and college prep throughout the page, what is disappointing is the lack of content readily available, especially under the "Workshops" section:

Again, the creator decided to use paragraphs instead of providing either a few brief sentences followed by links and maybe bullet points

Under "Test Prep" and "Workshops," the creator only added notes saying that due to COVID-19, all workshops and college prep series are on hold and they "encourage students to take advantage of the online resources" without providing links or possible outside sources or webpages

Add a bullet point or list or online digital library resources for Test Prep and Workshops:

        - eBooks
        - Online groups
        - Zoom schedule for workshops and classes

- The links offered under "Online Prep Test" are great and incredibly useful; however, they are punctuated by unnecessary blurbs of info that no one will really want to read:

Remove the unnecessary blurbs; we know the links are for test prep and tutoring.

Add more links for other test prep websites and services

Adjusting the page will make it more streamlined, more user friendly and scannable. Teens are always moving around and on the go- might as well make sure everything is accessible and meets their needs because this page as is doesn't offer much. In short, its boring and unhelpful.

Link to Original webpage: https://www.lapl.org/teens/college-career/get-ready-for-college

Looking at the page itself, the layout is clean and th typography is well placed; I have no issues making out or reading the text on the page. Everything is well spaced and it is easy to determine- without seeing the name -that this is a library website.

Areas the website excels:
1. Colorful, welcoming
2. Links to everything
3. Can click and slide through to see what is offered (to name a few):
  - News on the library
  - Sustainability
  - Safety protocols
  - How to check on holds
4. While there are lines of text, it is not excessive and they are helpful and offer details that the user can easily scan

However, there are some areas where the creator could rewrite the webpage to make it look more streamlined:

- While broken up into three horizontal grids, the webpage does not have main headings for each grid:
   - Each subsection has its own subheading:
      1. Featured Events (clickable link to new page)
      2. Upcoming events
      3. Featured Booklist
- To make the page more streamlined, I would add a main heading to each horizontal grid to offer a label or designation so the user knows where they are, what they are looking at, and where they can find it:
   - Welcome to the Library (Vertical Grid #1)
   - Events at the Library
   - Book list(s)
   - Digital Resources
- While I appreciate the slides and photos, they could perhaps streamline this further by offering bullet point lists to streamline and allow the user to pick and choose

Link to Original source: https://ccclib.org/

The LAPL Teen Web: Main Page

College and Career
      2. Teen events
      3. Homework Resources
   - Marketed successfully to site visitors (i.e. teens, parents, teachers)
   - Accessible to all:
      1. Mobile friendly
      2. Laptop and desktop accessible
- Easily identifiable as a library page
- Self explanatory of who the audience is/user community
- Colorful and warm; visually stunning

What needs revision/rewriting:
- The entire page does not have a "grab and go" appearance:
   - Teens are often in a hurry; this could leave the teen user impatient as they want to scan and not necessarily read something
   - With the exception of the LAPL Teen Events Calendar, everything else is written in paragraphs when a few sentences could be used
- Does not use lists and tables:
1.Dial back on the excessive words, create a user friendly and simplistic approach
   2. For example:
     a. Teen Blogs grid could be consolidated down to a brief sentence or so, designating that section of the website; offering a bullet point list of links to previous blog posts
     b. Teen Reviews also suffers from this and needs a list versus a paragraph of information that a user isn't going to want to read; clickable links and bullet points will work just as well

Link to Original page: https://www.lapl.org/teens

Teen Services of the San Juan Capistrano Public Library

I am familiar with using the San Juan Capistrano Library website and previously found the webiste too cluttered. However, upon revisiting it, I have found that the website itself- especially the Teens services webpage - is well-written and does not need much to improve it.

The aesthetics of the page are minimalistic, with splashes of colors and image icons to designate the services offered to teens, creating a square grid:

1. Research
2. Read
3. Get Involved
4. College and Careers

The page also has a sidebar drop-down menu offering the same services and links, with the addition of "Driver's Permit Practice Tests." There are also shareable links available for social media, as seen by icons at the bottom of the page.

By using the "less is more" approach to language and words and not going for visual screaming images, the San Juan Capistrano Public Library's Teen services page offers an easy user experience.

Original page: https://www.ocpl.org/teens

Kids & Teens on City of San Diego Public Library

While slightly busier and containing more visual screaming in terms of image icons and the navigation tool bar, the library website is run by the City of San Diego and offers more information in regards to what is available, making the website user friendly and welcome to everyone, including visitors and not just locals:

City of San Diego navigation toolbar:
1. Leisure
2. Resident Resources
3. Doing Business
4. Library
5. Public Safety
6. City Hall

Library Services navigation toolbar:
1. Public Library Home
2. About the Library
3. Services
4. eLibrary
5. Programs and Events
6. Central Library
7. Library Locations
8. Kids & Teens
9. IDEA Lab

Opening to the Kids & Teens webpage, we see even further that the creator of the website also chose to streamline the page, offering the following:
- Drop-down side menu for Kids and Teens; the creator utilized bullet points and links versus excessive words and paragraphs which adds to the clean design of the page
- Link to Events Calendar versus providing an extensive visual and verbal list
- Much like the Teens webpage of the SJC Public Library, the San Diego Library's Kids & Teens webpage creates a square like layout with intersecting blocks, designating the different services and programs offered for children, listed below:
- Row #1:
1. Spring into STEAM: Let's Grow!
2. 1000 Books: A Literary Program for Pre-readers
3. Binford I can, Too! Center (Library Accessibility Services for Children)
- Row #2:
1. Spring Camps: Do Your Homework @ the Library
2. Library NExT
3. IDEA Labs
- Row #3:
1. Introducing Odi's Library Day
2. Distance Learning Center
3. SDPL Virtual Hub

The way everything is grouped or consolidated together while also being separate is useful and pleasing as it allows the user to easily navigate and scan the page. All in all, though there is a lot of information on the SDPL website in general, the creator knew what they were doing when designing this website and for that it makes it want the user to explore and learn and grow.

Link to Original webpage: https://www.sandiego.gov/public-library/kidsandteens
