after the war, people were living in houses like slums amd squatter and shophouses that are unclean and have restricted space. Inorder to take over Singapore Improvement Trust in 1960, the Housing and Development Board was set up. When HDB flats are built, the living conditions improved and the residents no longer need to live in unclean and crowded environment. They enjoyed better basic services for example clean water and electricity. More than half of the population living in Singapore were living in HDB flats by Mrach 1976.

In the past, high density, high rise building public housing models has been adopted to satisfy the housing demands. Now, the government has increase the number of solar panels in Singapore over the years. Singapore's government has been pushing the use of sustainable energy. The goverment will progressly expands solar panels installation to other blocks too.

Private condominiums
Private condominiums are cheaper than landed properties but are much more costly than HDB apartments.. They are usually equipped with features/facilities such as security services, children's playground, barbecue area, enclosed car park ,swimming pool, tennis court, fitness center squash courts.

Executive condominium
Executive Condominiums share the same facilities and features as private ones , but there are some restrictions and rules that must be obeyed

The government which first focused on meeting needs slowly changed to focusing on proper shelter and to the quality that extended outside the design to the surrounding living environment.
