The previous event wasn't that significant when on May 10the western powers were surprised by Hitler's stroke against Low countries Called Fall Gelb.

They sent General Wilhelm von Leeb’s Army Group C to stay in the Maginot line to divert French forces. Bock’s Army Group B were sent to the baasin of Maas River, and the group A went to the Ardennes. Army group B comprised Küchler’s 18th Army, with one armoured division and airborne support, to attack the Netherlands, and Reichenau’s 6th, with two armoured divisions, to advance over the Belgian plain.

Even that forces had to deal too with allies, they conquered very fast France and their neighbouring countries:

Netherlands sourrenders on May 15 (their goverment exilled to London)

Belgium: Lropoldo III surrendered 28 May (he wasn't supported by the goverment, that did the same and went to London)

After getting Belgium, German forces directed their attcks towards France. Taking advantage of the weak situation of the defenses in the Ardennes Forest, a region considered difficult for armored vehicles, the Germans managed to penetrate deep into French territory.

On June 14, 1940, Paris was occupied by Germany. A couple of weeks after that, on June 22, the French government that couldn't resist more signed an armistice with Germany at Compiègne. This agreement stablished France into a German-occupied zone in the northwest, but an unoccupied zone in the south, administered by the Vichy regime, which collaborated with the Nazis.

Sources

The Battle of Britain was the first military campaign that was fully in the air. After France defeat in June , Hitler planned Operation Sea Lion: a full-scale invasion of Britain. But, before this could happen, Germany needed to gain air strength. At the beginning , the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) launched a massive aerial assault on the Royal Air Force (RAF). Their objective was to destroy British air defenses, bomb key industrial and military targets, and afraiding population. At first, the Luftwaffe was focused on attacking coastal defenses and airfields. In September, the campaign shifted into the Blitz, a period of heavy bombing on cities like London. The courage and skill of RAF pilots, many of them came from other nations, played an essential role. By late October, Hitler called off the invasion plan: Germany had failed to achieve air superiority. The battle marked Nazi Germany’s first major defeat, showing that GB won't surrender easily.

Sources

Operation Barbarossa, launched on June 22, Germany’s massive invasion of the Soviet Union, the largest military operation, with about three million German soldiers alongside forces from Finland, Romania, and other Axis allies, with the purpose of crushing Soviet resistance in a campaign that Hitler believed would be completed in some weeks. The German strategy was divided into three major army groups: Group North advancing towards Leningrad, Group Centre toward Moscow, and Group South aiming to seize Ukraine and the oil-rich Caucasus. At the beginning the Germans achieved enormous territorial gains and provoked losses on Soviet forces through surprise attacks, but as the campaign dragged into the Russian winter, logistical failures, and the brutal climate halted the German advance just outside Moscow, where a powerful Soviet counteroffensive in December 1941 marked the beginning of Germany’s failure on the Eastern Front and a crucialpoint in the war.

Sources

The Battle of Midway, June 4-7, was a strategic naval battle in the Pacific between the Japanese Navy and the United States Navy. Continuing their victory at Pearl Harbor, the Japanese wanted to eliminate the U.S. as a Pacific power by atracting its aircraft carriers into a trap near the island of Midway, however, American cryptographers had broken Japanese codes and knew in advance both the date and location of the attack. In the battle that followed, U.S. bombers could sink four Japanese aircraft carriers shifting the balance of power in the Pacific. The victory wasgoing to be decissive later in the war, halting Japanese expansion and beginning a series of offensives that would lead lastly to Japan’s defeat.

Sources
