Cross cutting

Cross cutting is when you take different scenes and scramble the order for example beginning in the middle and the middle at the beginning and the end at the end. This can be used to show information that the audience might need to know later in the story but it might only make sense at a different part in the story. This can be effective since it allows the audience to have a sense of foreshadowing and deeper understanding of what is going on. For example, if someone needs groceries and goes shopping, you might show the part where they are shopping and then show them eating all the leftover groceries.

Split Scenes

Split scenes are when you have to scenes playing out on stage, however, the audience should only be able to hear from one side at a time. This can be applied to a performance in order to engage the audience, and provide two sides to different stories or add to one story. For example, You could act out a news scene, first have the intro then have a reporter somewhere giving the details etc. I think that this is super effective and gives the audience a chance to really engage in the performance and understand what is going on.

Freeze Frames/ Still Images

Still images are used by creating a picture or pause effect on a scene. This can be applied to a performance in order to give the audience a better look or understanding of what is going on, it also opens an opportunity to use Thought tracking. For example, if People are ice skating, you might use freeze frames when someone is falling. I think that this is somewhat effective to the audience because although it adds more depth to the performance I don't see how you could use it without anything else and it still being effective, however if it is always tied into something else I think that it is really effective.

Flash forward and flash back are when you show the events before or after a dramatic event. These are used to show the build up or effect of the dramatic event to provide an engaging deeper connection between the audience and performers. for example, on someones graduation you could flashback to when they were younger and growing up, or you could flash forward to where they have a job. This is super effective since it engages the audience and can be really entertaining.

Forum Theater

Forum theater is when the actor or narrator interacts with the audience asking a question or when the audience interacts with the actors using audience participation. This is mostly effective for the use of involving the audience which further engages them in the performance. for example, if a bad guy comes on stage the audience can boo or cheer when a good guy comes on, they might also be asked to share their opinion in what should happen. This can help the audience to feel as though they are part of the performance themselves.

This is when people stand around somebody and say a lot of things about something they did, slowly at first but soon they speed up and don't stop until the person tells them to. This can be used to show the consequences for a characters actions, or how everybody feels about them. For example if a student were to walk down a conscious alley after receiving bad grades their parents might say that they are disappointed in them. This is really effective as well as it provides a better understanding for the audience about how all the other characters feel towards that other character.

Marking The Moment

Marking the moment is used to slow down or highlight a certain moment within the scene. This can be used in order to acknowledge an important moment in the scene and help the audience to understand better what is going on. for example you might be running in a race and slow down the winning moment, but then play it again at the normal speed to show contrast. I think that this is effective since it allows for a more dramatic event that leads to an overall better scene.

Narration is used to tell a story, and comment on what is going to happen next in the story line. This is used in order to help the audience know exactly what is going on. for example someone might narrate some one in a classroom, talking about what the teacher is doing for that day, or cause and effect events. I think that this is really effective for TIE since it allows the audience to know exactly what is going on and what is going to happen.

Soundscape is created by placing sounds within the performance to create a mood or setting within the performance. this can be used in order to create a perfect setting in which the audience will better understand what's going on in the performance. for example if the scene was set in a jungle you might play some safari sounds to let the audience know where you are in that scene. I think that this is also super effective since without it most of the time the audience would be confused and then lose interest.

Thought tracking is used in order to know something that the character is feeling and that you wouldn't necessarily know from just looking at the character. For example if kids are building a snowman and someone else knocks it down, something that might be said, "Man I hate that kid." As an audience you wouldn't have known that they hated him. I think that Thought tracking can be very effective when used correctly since it helps the audience to better understand what might come later in the performance or just how that character is feeling.

Alternate endings are when the performance shows two endings to the same scene at a major turning point. this is super effective as it leaves no questions with the audience about what could have happened. For example in a horror movie when the people always choose to separate and then eventually die, you could alternate the ending to where they all stay together and survive. This is super effective when you're really trying to get a message across.
