In the Novel, A Night Divided, takes place in the 60's.There are events and words that lead the reader to understand what the time period is.In the first chapter the readers can infer what year the novel takes place because Nielson writes that the Berlin wall was built overnight and the readers can see that Germany was still recovering after losing World War II. Getra came to a realization that"It was August 13,1961 a day I would remember for the rest of my life when a prison had been built around us as we sleep"(Nielson 1). The Berlin wall was built in 1961 so the readers can easily know that the book takes place in the 60's. If you don't know about the Berlin wall you can also see that Germany was still struggling after the war which shows that it had to be around the 60s. These refrences help show what time period this book takes place in.

In the novel,A Night Divided the protagonist is a 12 year old girl named Gerta Lowe. Gerta describes herself as a bold person. Also the name Gerta was an old name that was mostly a German name.While walking with her friend she thinks"I was a bold and outspoken"(Nielson 18). Gerta says that she is bold because she likes to take risks and that she does not care what other people think. Also she did not care if the guards saw her she waved at her brother Dominic knowing that she could not.last Gerta's boldness with how she acts and dresses reveals the time period because people were more bold in the 60's.

In the novel, A Night Divided the minor characters are the soldiers protecting the wall and they set the tone of the main character Gerta. Even though they are just doing there job they can seem very intimidating to the citizens inside the wall. The soldiers set a tone by holding guns and acting scary and tough. As Gerta looked up she saw that, "His name stitched onto the uniform was Muller and he stared down as if frightening me was entertaining"(Nielson 24). When the soldiers are present in the scene they bring a feeling of fear. Their tone is established by them carrying guns and their rule which is that they shall kill on the first site of someone trying to cause problems. When the soldiers are around their intimidating act against all of the citizens.The tone that the soldiers have effect other characters including Gerta with their intimidating act.

In the Novel, A Night Divided,the author creates two stereotypical groups the guards and the citizens. All the people in these two groups are thought to act in certain ways.The guards are expected to be serious and not care who you are and how old you are. While the citizens are expected to be rule followers and not stand up to the guards. When Gerta looks past the wall "The Grenzer had used his rifle to warn me"(Nieslson 64).Gerta always knew that the guards are stereotyped to be serious and scary. But Gerta still gets scared when the guards get in her face with rifles threatening her which is where they get their stereotypes. This guard fits the stereotype that the citizens give them.

In the novel,A Night Divided the biggest conflict is Anna and Gerta always fighting. Gerta and Anna struggle to get along because of what happens to Anna's brother. Gerta realizes that "Anna still wasn't speaking to me she blames us for what Peter did"(Nielson 68).Gerta always thought of Anna as her best and only friend and she still wants to be friends with Anna. Anna stopped talking to Gerta because she thinks that Gerta's family is the reason that her brother died.So this drove their friendship into the ground and Anna stopped caring for Gerta. The historical time period affected the character versus character struggle because the Berlin wall and the rules affect the way people act.

In the novel,A Night Divided The recurring motifs is family.The importance of family is a main part in the book which is shown throughout the book. Gerta thinks that she is so lucky to have Fritz on page 134. Fritz is a great brother to Gerta and Gerta realizes this and knows that she would not be in this situation without him. Fritz cares so much for Gerta and helps her survive and get through the day without worry. Fritz says that Mama loves them just as much as you do and misses them so much on page 36. We learn that the family got separated so this effected Gerta so much and it frustrates her when her mom seemed like she didn't care.Luckily Fritz stepped up as the man of the house and takes care of Gerta when she is frustrated and helps her and her mom always when they are in need. In all, The family relies on each other and is an important part in their lives.

What is The Symbol

In the novel,A Night Divided Nielson uses a shovel to symbolize freedom. The shovel represents freedom because it is used to dig out of the Berlin wall. Fritz accidentally breaks their shovel so Gerta recommends that ¨We can get another shovel¨(Nielson 189).This reveals how important the shovel is to them and that it is their only way of escaping out of the Berlin wall. Freedom is referred to as the shovel because the shovel is the only thing that can help them achieve their goal of freedom. They both have files and Fritz will have to go to military training soon so the only thing they can look forward to is the possibility of gaining freedom used by the shovel. The author uses a shovel to represent a shovel that can gain freedom.

In the novel,A Night Divided the theme is When faced with difficulties, regular people, even kids, can do extraordinary things. In a night divided Gerta and Fritz face many challenges but they overcome those challenges and do amazing things. They both work together in difficult times to create good out of bad. While in a tough situation with officer Muller Gerta and Fritz solve the problem ¨There is more for your family in the west its the life you would want for them if you could choose Fritz caught my idea you don´t have to dig but you might be able to keep other officers away from this area¨(Nielson 198). While they were digging Officer Muller caught them and was going to shoot them but they came up with a great idea to save themselves. When Gerta and Fritz or both are in a tough situation they both find ways to get out of it with smart ideas. This reveals that when Gerta and Fritz are in tough situations they figure out ways to solve the problems. When in bad situations Fritz and Gerta find ways out of it no matter what.

The novel A Night Divided is a great novel which has been super popular for the last decade. The historical setting really helps the readers understand the time period and so does how the characters act. Character traits mostly match the time period of when the book takes place. The minor characters help to propel the plot and make the story more interesting. All over the book Gerta sees a lot of stereotypes which she agrees with. The protagonist Gerta a twelve year old girl who realizes that family means everything and it shows up in her life every single day. And she will find out that a shovel will symbolize a chance of freedom. to throughout the book when she faces conflict she will need to learn that the theme ¨When faced with difficult things regular people can do amazing things¨.
