In a letter to the President of the International Commission Against the Death Penalty, Pope Francis expressed the Catholic Church's opposition to the death penalty, calling it "inadmissible, no matter how serious the crime committed." He continued, "It is an offence against the inviolability of life and the dignity of the human person, which contradicts God's plan for man and society, and his merciful justice, and impedes the penalty from fulfilling any just objective. It does not render justice to the victims, but rather fosters vengeance."

Gross, which questioned the constitutionality of the death penalty. "You know, sometimes people make mistakes, [executing] the wrong person. It is arbitrary. There is lots of evidence on that. Justice Potter Stewart said it was like being hit by lightning, whether the person is actually executed. If carried out, a death sentence, on average takes place now 18 years after it is imposed. The number of people who are executed has shrunk dramatically. They are centered in a very small number of counties in the United States. Bottom line is, let's go into the issue. It is time to go into it again."

Prisons are overcrowded and cells made for one individual are often occupied by various criminals. This lack of space makes murders and violence inside the jail much more common and the death penalty might just be the solution. By killing the most dangerous of the prison we are not only decreasing the population, allowing for more space, but are also taking out the main aggressors and murdered inside the jail area.
