Haunted hall

Back to 2016, when I was a fresh man in CityU and I was live in CityU hall, a haunting issue happened. I remembered there was unusual sound from the corridor all the time at around 1 am. I did not care about it at the beginning, but it kept happened irregularly. One night, I chatted with floor mates and some one raised the topic of the unusual sound, meanwhile, she said there was one student who committed suiside in 2015 and he lived in our floor. And I said: Don’t be so superstitious and I don’t believe these stuffs. Just when I finished my words, a cold breeze and somethings fell down. It is a haunted head I made for halloween, meanwhile, people ran away from my room and refused to come my room again. People :), so ridiculous.

Lam Kit Yu, Cassie-Consulting a professor about programming and learning Java

There are a few compulsory major courses involving programming for linguistics students of CityU. As a linguistics student of CityU, I have had a course learning Java which is really difficult for me who has no computer programming background to grasp the knowledge well. I am really impressed by the Professor teaching this course as he is really kind and sincere in teaching. One memorable experience is that he invited me to come to his office to consult him about the Java. I have consulted him for one whole hour, which is really long and I really appreciate his help. However, I still found it hard to understand and follow the course well. The Professor then initiatively told me that he will also be available every Wednesday to Friday afternoon and he told me I should not find a private Java tutor since Java have to be learnt by our own selves. Yet, although he is a really patient professor, I still cannot understand his words well. I am really confused that I was like in a haze finding my own way out and I always don’t understand why do linguistics majors in CityU need to learn programming. But one thing I can be sure is that all these programming courses must be very unforgettable that I will never forget the hardship throughout the courses in the rest of my life. The course is a killer to most linguistics students indeed.

Just a random lesson experience that I messed up
As a freshman in CityU, I don’t have much memorable experiences here, but there’s one little episode that makes my classmates laughed at me for two weeks.

As I was attending my first EN lesson in Semester B this year (I’m an English major student), I was very encouraged to answer questions during lessons. You know teachers always like having a bunch of hands held up high waiting for them to pick answers from. So me, myself and I decided I have to take the courage to answer as much as I can.

The professor was asking some random geography-related questions to light up the atmosphere, and said, “so, let’s all point to the north”. At lightning speed, I pointed to where I thought it was north. And it turns out the clever me was pointing towards the ceiling.

If to explain how embarrassed I was, my face went green and, (I was sitting at the front) I heard laughters from the whole class and I didn’t dare to turn back.

After this delightful incident a few classmates texted me on Instagram about how funny I was and how I brightened up the lesson.

Geez, it wasn’t fun at all.

Though I have already spent 2 years at CityU, sometimes I can still get lost in this complicated maze. When I first stepped in to the campus, I wondered why the campus was full of colors, like purple, green, yellow and blue. Later, I was told by my friends that these colors were used to classified the zones. They teased me. I’m always lost in the campus whenever I’m going to hand in assignments or attend classes. I’m totally “lost in direction”, and always need someone to guide me to the destination.

Friendly Exchange student
Previously, I think that exchange students are difficult to approach because they normally do not talk much with local students in class. One day, an exchange student I met in a day tour said hello to me and ask me for lunch, it made me think of he memorable day tour. In this semester, I have joined a day tour which aims to bring non-local students to explore different aspects of Hong Kong such as cultural, eco and food. I found that exchange students are actually very friendly and willing to make friends with local students. They even actively exchanged social media with me and asked me to hang out with them again. I think it is a precious opportunity for me to get accustomed to different cultures and widen my horizons. I realize how valuable it is to join more activities in university. I hope that I can keep in touch with those exchange students and bring them to explore more about Hong Kong in the future.

Tony

The middle of red doors

I remember the most memorable thing I did. Last week, I did one special and meaningful things in CityU. There is a rumor in Cityu for a long time. As we can see, there are five red doors in the doorway of CityU. Someone pointed out that you can NEVER go through the middle of the red door because there is a magic power. If you go through the middle of the red door, your GPA would be lower than 3.0 or failed. Therefore, we can notice that there are lack of people go through the middle of the red door when they leave from Cityu to Festival Walk. My friends challenged me to go through it with them. I am a year 4 student so I am brave and I would like to give it a try. Thus, my friends and I tried to go through it and I would like to see whether we can get <3.0 GPA or not. If I can get the GPA which is higher than 3.0, it will prove that the magic power is fake. Otherwise, it will prove that the magic power is TRUE! I will excited to see the result at the end of the semester. Personally I think it is an interesting experience for me in my university life.

I am taking GE2412 in this semester and the tutor is Sarah. This course is interesting and the tutor is so good. This week is week 7, I attended the class as usual. During today’s class, Sarah told us to try to write a narrative about a memorable experience in CityU in around 200 words within 15 minutes. I found that is so challenging to me. I spent 5 minutes to think about my topic and I spent the rest of time to type my work. So, I finally typed this piece of work. This activity is funny! OH MY GOD! I LOVE THIS COURSE SO MUCH! Thank you for reading my work!

Chau Pak Hei(55066888)

I did revision in CityU’s library in the morning. I put my stuffs in my seat and then I went to canteen to have a meal. After the lunch, I tapped my wallet to the card-scanner but no reaction. Then, I noticed that my student ID card was not in the wallet and was left in the library. Then, I told a security guard. The security guard wanted to help me to get my student ID card. Unfortunately, I did not know the seat number of my seat. The security guard let me come inside the library. Then, he followed me because he did not really know whether I was really CityU’s student. I went to my desk and then I did not find my student ID card on my desk. Then, I worried that the security guard would regard me as non-CityU student and ask me to leave the library as soon as possible . I worried he would scold me like a lion. Fortunately, he did not. He bought me to the library help desk to see whether my ID card was there. Then, I successfully found the ID card.
I kept saying sorry for causing inconvenience to the security guard. What I felt warm was that he encouraged me a lot and he showed great patience.

THE LECTURE BEGINS WITH A SONG

Andy the Great
This event happened in the last semester. My professor used to play some songs right before the start of the every lecture. He loved Alan Walker so much that he played the song “Fade” every time. Yet, to be honest, the song didn’t arouse me at all. It was quite annoying. Then, when I got a chance to submit a weekly thinkpiece(the homework that allows us to rethink about the learning outcome of the week and share our feeling.), I highlighted my feeling about the song and recommended a song of Avril Lavigne(Head above water) to him. In the coming week, he showed my thinkpiece in the lecture note and said very loudly “it blows my mind...”. The lecture theatre was full of laugh.

My unforgettable birthday
I spent my 20th birthday, the most unforgettable one in my life, with my besties at Cityu last year.
My dear friends gave me a big surprise. I was not even thought of this before. They celebrated my birthday by planning me a birthday party at hall. The bedroom was emerged in joy and surprise, the wall is packed with beautiful balloons and decorations, the table is filled with all my favourite delicacies: hand-made birthday cake, strawberry ice cream, honey favored chicken wings....
Following the lovely birthday song, I blowed out the candle and made a wish. Then, I opened the mystery gift- a shiny pretty dress covered in sequins! It is the dress that I had been longed for! I hugged everyone of them and gave them a big kiss.
I am so grateful to have such great friends who will never forget my birthday. Thank you for making my perfect 20 year-old.

On a Saturday morning , I was waiting for my friend at the podium in AC1. I was sitting alone and suddenly two women came by saying that they were Christians and if I had some time. I didn’t want to talk to them as I was afraid if they would invite me to any Christian activity or talk about some stories about Jesus for ages. From my experiences, this so-called small talk would usually take some time which I didn’t want to get involved in.
They asked me to try the special earphones which were made and designed by their fellow. When I put it on for no longer than 2 seconds, one of the woman said “isn’t that wonderful?. I was like , I hadn’t even heard a note! They then asked me to compare the quality of their ‘handmade’, ‘tailor-made ‘ ones with my apple earphones. To be honest, I found their earphones very weird in fitting into my ears and there were apparently noises listening to songs. Comparing two of the earphones was a waste of time since the one from Apple were way much better!!!! They said it was a free gift for me and I was welcome to use the earphones. I refused as I didn’t want to bring anything useless back home nor getting involved with these troublesome strangers again . I would say everyone is welcome to have a look at the campus but it is really necessary for the security guards to check the student ID cards from time to time in order to get these disturbing strangers out of the campus.

It was my first ocamp of my life which made me excited and expectant. However, unfortunately, Black rainstorm signal was issued at the first day of the camp. We were not allowed to check in our campsite. We all assumed that the camp would have to be cancelled that definitely broke all of our hearts. Yet, the organizing committee made a bold decision and made the whole camp more memorable and special to all of the freshmen. At that night, we, together, spent a night in our new school. As a freshman unknown to the environment, the senior leaders took good care of us. Despite the crowd and bad weather, the passion and enthusiasm of everyone warm and spirit up the room and the school environment.

(A night to remember)

Hurray! It was finally the last week of the semester. I was really excited for my coming trip to Europe. However, there were lots of project and assignment before I can totally immerse in my wonderful holiday. On a usual day after finishing the class, I stayed with my classmates to discuss for the coming project relating to the design of a bilingual booklet. We worked really hard in proofreading the paragraphs and choosing an appealing picture as the cover. While we are having our heated debate on choosing the picture, all of the lights were gone and we was kept in a really dark classroom . All of us were so nervous as the deadline was nearly approaching. At first we thought this was a trick performed by our classmates, intentionally planned to give a special surprise for us. We ran as quickly as a group of leopards in hopes of searching for a new place. After we went out of the classroom, we discovered that there was an electricity suspension in the campus. What’s an unlucky experience to remember!

Sometimes we would buy some beer and chat for hours in the hall area even at late night. We usually meet at 12 or 1 at night after finishing our homework and taking a shower. Then we would go to the gas station and buy beer there. After that, we would walk back to hall area and sit outside mul A to chat and share some funny things to each other. It’s the best time of the day and I enjoyed it a lot. Then we would go back to hall at around 3 or 4 to get some sleep. And then next day I would call them at 8:30 as the three of us have the same class at 9.

At the beginning of the academic year 2018 to 2019, the Criminology and Sociology Training Camp was imspirational to me since I had a good time with those participants, especially when playing the detective game, which I have well-planned it for a whole month. They will have to investigate a murder case by collecting clues and interrorgate the suspects. The 3-day camp served as a momentous opportunity to impart my knowledge and experience to the freshmen. At first, I was recruited as a student helper, but after meeting my hard-working and enthusiastic peers, I was really impressed by their attitude. They aimed high and strove to be tremendously successful. They also helped me to concretize my idea. They have even supported and encouraged me to be a better organizer. I seized every precious chance to associate with my colleagues and juniors. And gradually, I had adjusted my role to a student mentor; not only cared about my mentees, but also designed various major-related activities to facilitate their bidirectional learning, such as life reflection and orienteering. Throughout the process, I was able to easily observe the importance of being a mentor. It could also boost up my interpersonal and intrapersonal growth. Since then, my sustainable contribution and participation in the mentorship scheme have enlightened my university life. I will absolutely treasure the relationship.

Discussion till midnight

At last semester, I took a course that needed to have presentation that interestingly was told to have it by taking a video tape. Therefore, we gathered after our lesson in the evening and started the discussion at the study room. We almost finished all the stuff at around 22:00 but then some technical issues happened and when we settled that, it was already 11 pm. Suddenly, a security guard came and scolded us, told that we shouldn't stay that late. And so, we continued our job by hiding near a stair in AC1 and we worked quietly till 00:30. After that, I just made it to the last MTR to my home. One more thing to say, I got 9am lesson on the next day.

College is a place to learn how to be a good adult. Indeed, I learnt a lesson in this semester. Having gone to the university, I did have a rainbow of fantasy of my college life. For instance, I hoped to go to the orientation camp to meet new friends. I hoped to have a new boyfriend. I hoped to live in the dorm t get rid of my annoying parents.Frank speaking, I almost achieved all my dreams. My life was once blissful, flourished and awesome. However, the reality is more cruel than the imagination. One day, a fairy woke me up from the dreams. They were lies, cheats and betray. I was shocked, irritated and heartbroken. At that time, I realised that little girl need to grow up to protect herself. Fortunately, with the support of my friends, I feel...better now. And I forgive those who hurt me. Hope my life will be better.

Memorable Experience at Ac1 canteen
When I first visited CityU during the registration day, I had my lunch with my friends who were also freshman at CityU at the AC1 canteen, the only canteen we found nearby the registration counter. Even it is a weekday in August, there were still lots of people having lunch at the canteen, making me feel shocked about the busyness of the. When I was searching for the menu, I found it was shown on the monitor instead of a printing copy, which is totally different from the restaurants outside. And the relatively low priced cuisine had also surprised me as it is much more affordable than the food court in the Festival Walk. However what was the most surprising is that there are no straws provided in the canteen, and I have just ordered milk tea when I realised the problem. Finally, I used a chopstick instead of using a straw to stir the drink, which is really inconvenient. However, I found there are no straws provided in the whole CityU and I am now trying to adapt to the life without straws.

I joined the programme of City Youth Empowerment Project in last year semester . The project aim is for student to be the service providers and to contact with the people who suffered and recovered from mental disorder. The project is a group base class which be held at a classroom located at ac1 5/f. Student and the programme participants first watched movie together, and share Their thoughts and feelings about the movie and the issues happened in the movie related to themselves. The most unforgettable thing from this project is that one of the participants said that, they are no difference from others, they are just some people who recovered from sickness, they want to live a normal life like other people do. Although I did not hold any labels on the people who suffered from mental disorder before, seems discrimination really happening to this group of people. Therefore, since that day, I have tried to tell people who have some prejudices on patients of mental disorder, telling people that they have no big difference from us, they are just suffering from illness.

The red door
Everyone knows the tale of the red door in CityU. And all students in CityU will avoid using the middle one, the cursing power of the door will make you have a low GPA (Lower than 3). However, the orientation camps of CityU would like to challenge the tale. They will force the participants to walk through the door in the middle one. As the participants are too afraid of doing this task, the mentors will encourage them to shout slogans like, “exceeding 3, achieve 4 (in GPA )”. And that's my wonderful experience of facing a huge psychological barrier with my groupmates. "Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities, because it is the quality which guarantees all others.” by Churchill.

Lost my octopus card
I was so tired and wanted to go home early last Monday. I had lesson in the morning and needed to shoot creative photography homework last Monday. My friends and I went to playground as they played basketball. I spent an hour to shoot them and had tea with them. Tea set in AC3 canteen was yummy and cheap so we always eat there. Unfortunately, I found my octopus card was missing after tea.I was so sacred and hopeless as it has money in the octopus card. My friends went to canteen and playground but they could not find. I believed that my card was left in classroom. Therefore,I went to classroom but the light is dark and had unusual sound. I thought whether it had a ghost and was afraid. It also had some wind after my back. I found and looked around which I still could not find. Finally, my octopus card was found in security room. I was very lucky and will be aware next time.

In last semester, I had a late class at 7:00 pm with my classmates. Since we have another class before that, we cannot have dinner before the lesson. Therefore, we will usually buy some snacks for the lesson. One time, we bought some chocolates for the class. However, we carelessly throw the wrapping paper to the previous row and it stops at the shoulder of one of the student. We don’t know that student and feel embarrassed to ask him to take away the rubbish. As a result, one of my friends decided to take away the rubbish by himself. He asked that student to help him get back the pencil by patting the shoulder of that student. At the same time, he takes away the rubbish which stopped on the student’s shoulder. This embarrass experience caused us not to eat during the lesson anymore.
