During this extract we get to know a lot about piggy and ralph. We first learn that piggy doesn’t know how to swim, It is because piggy represent the human intelligence contained in a brain while that Ralph represents physic and charisma. We also get to informations about their story, Ralph father is a navy commander which can explain why Ralph is that much charismatic and strong. He got raised by a soldier. His father died during war on the field. For piggy, he lived with his auntie whos the owner of a sweet-shop, she used to give piggy a lot of sweets which explain why he’s kind of obese. The story is happening during the second world war when a war plane crashed into an island. We also learn that piggy is pretty pessimistic about the future, fearing for his life, he can be the most relatable character because of his honesty and point of view about the situation. They discover the conch, a shell that they use to call everyone following the sound. Piggy is the one that got the idea since he’s the most intelligent of the the group.

Piggy is portrayed as someone determined

P.15 : We learn that Piggy lives with his aunt, who takes care of him, which shows that he depends on her.

P.15 : The historical context is shown by the plane crash and the « atom bomb », which suggests World War II.

P.16 : The expression “ill-omened talk” refers to words that suggest danger or bad events in the future.

P.17 : Piggy insists on taking names and organizing the group. This shows that he is serious, intelligent, and values order. The shell Ralph saw is called a conch shell.

P.19 : Piggy realizes that the conch can be used to call the other boys together. This is important because it helps create order and shows Piggy’s intelligence.

In Chapter 1 of Lord of the Flies, the story takes place on a deserted tropical island during World War II after a plane crash. Ralph meets Piggy, who is overweight, asthmatic and intelligent. Piggy cannot swim and reveals that he lives with his auntie. Ralph is happy because there are no adults, which gives him a sense of freedom. Piggy talks about the situation in a serious way, sometimes making “ill-omened talk” that suggests danger. They find a conch shell, and Piggy understands that it can be used to call the other boys. Thanks to the conch, the boys gather and begin to organize themselves. This shows the importance of communication and order. Piggy insists on taking names, which proves he values rules and organization.

(p.93 → p.94)

→ Discuss the following quote from the novel and interpret its meaning: "He was the only boy on the island whose hair never seemed to grow."

This quote is very symbolic because hair growth represents the boys becoming like savages. Since Piggy's hair doesn't grow, it shows he stays connected to civilization and rules. He is the only one who don't change his mindset, which prove he is the voice of reason on the island.

→ Explain Piggy's idea and comment on how it informs our perception of the character.

Piggy’s ideas are always about logic and rules, like building shelters. This makes us see him as the most intelligent boy on the island. But it also shows he is not fit for a wild life, so we see him as a weak but smart character.

→ Summarise the interaction between Piggy and Ralph in this passage.

The interaction shows that Ralph is the boss, but Piggy is the one who thinks. They are like a team, but Ralph is sometimes ashamed to be seen with Piggy because the others laugh at him. It’s a strange friendship.

→ Find out how Piggy is perceived by the different characters.

The boys perceive Piggy as an outsider and a "loser." They only see his glasses and his weight, not his brain. For them, he is just someone to bully and they doesn't take his opinions seriously.

→ Pick out ONE word which encapsulates how the boys view Piggy and justify your choice.

I pick the word "Annoying" because that’s how the group feels about him. He is always talking about rules and his auntie, and the boys just want to be free and play. They don't want to hear the truth.

Jack is had a behavior of leader and chief, he do dirty trick and he want only hunting.Whereas Raph it's calme and kind and he want to be rescued.

In our opinion between the two characters the one who is the upper hand it's Jack because : "Clearly they were of the opinion that Jack had done the right thing, had put himself in the right by this generous apology and Raph, obscurely, in the wrong"(p104)

The metaphor and innuendo of this extract:" They were on different sides of a high barrier" represent the different mentality of Raph and Jack.

On the end of chapter 4 that represents a turning point in the novel because Jack revealed himself by the fact he is rude for others and he says " No hunting no food" so maybe he will give only the food for the hunters.

The main issue Jack faces is that he is obsessed with hunting but keeps failing to catch a pig. To face this issue, Jack focuses entirely on hunting and rejects responsibilities.

This passage of the book is here to present the dynamics between the two different groups is boys.

It’s presenting the littluns, a group composed of the smaller and younger children. These kids are presented as cry babies that often complains. Which creates a contrast with the group of the biguns composed of the older, taller and stronger kids who makes decisions on the island and sometimes bullies the little ones.

In this passage, we see a group of littluns : Percival , Johnny, and Henry the oldest and sort of leader of the littluns playing in the sand. Roger and Maurice of the biguns, bullies some littluns by destroying their sand castles, which shows the dynamic between these groups: the biguns are in charge of important things while the littluns just obey and wander on the island. That is a pattern that can be visible even in the real world, in places like corporations.

Here, the littluns represent innocent beings just obeying the orders while the biguns, like Roger, represent the beings corrupted by their powers.

Jack was very obsessed with the pig while ralph was 🤬 at him for letting the fire under no surveillance causing it to turn off.

The choirboys' chant celebrate the pig's death, it creates an unsettling atmosphere which gives cult vibes.

The literary device used is comparison that shows that they are still under the influence of society's code.

Jack becomes impulsive and violent. The comparison “as though he had spoken too loudly in church” emphasizes a feeling of embarrassment. Ralph is calm and focused on rules and survival, while Jack is more obsessed with power and hunting. It can be seen as a parody, as the boys imitate adult society in a way that its becomes exaggerated and absurd.

Jack separate himself from the rest of the group by a strong feeling of dominance and authoritarianism. He looks down upon the other boys whilst being an outsider from the group. While hunting he has the sudden realisation that he can be seeable and thinks that covering up himself is a good idea so he put clay all over himself before painting his face. All the expressions : "half-concealed", "like in the war", "to look like something else" shows how Jack is little by little, letting himself get consumed by the wild feeling. This shows how Jack is at a loss of "identity" and how he’s getting further and further from civilization showing how he is "becoming" someone else. In the other following expressions : "new face", "at an awesome stranger", "his siewy body held up a mask" the author shows the inner change of Jack, by putting on some paint he is metaphorically changing from one to another, successfully becoming something far from societies norms and becoming marginalized. Jack after putting on the mask seems happier, jumping everywhere and his thirst for blood is more than ever. This just shows how Jack is slowly turning out crazy, being almost like a "wild animal".
