I ran a report on the top point earners from all of my classes and it revealed some trends in which we all need to be mindful. 8 out of 10 of the top point earners in my classroom happen to be female. Only 2 sit in the front of the classroom. 4 out of 10 are very quiet students who do not participate in class discussion, readily. There is an 11 point difference between the top point earner and the 10th highest point earner.

I have noticed that my class with a large number of ECE students has earned more points than any of my other classes, including the advanced classes. The students who are most often always doing what they should have significantly fewer points than those who need to be asked multiple times to do something. There should be a balance between these 2 extremes, whether it's to award more to those who do what they should without being asked, or award less to those who take 5 requests to get started or come prepared to class. Would love some response to this.

Also, I would be cautious about displaying your whole class group on the screen for all to see each other's totals. The discrepancies between what they each have would certainly raise some questions by those I described above and perhaps their parents.

I think it always a challenge to be balanced in this situation. I think the only method is to be consistent with what points are awarded for. For example, if preparation fits under "Be Responsible," which I think it does, then everyone that is prepared to learn will earn a point. This should help to cover those students who are always doing what is asked, without being asked.

My main concern is that some students are telling me that I am one of the only teachers giving them points. In order for more buy in from students, we need to be consistent in utilizing this system in our classrooms. I have seen it to be effective when I am specific about what will help them earn points.

PBIS Rewards Redemption

As a parent I am concerned about my daughter even earning enough points to participate in the event. She is in all advanced classes and earned all A’s in the first trimester and I have never been approached about off-task behaviors and yet she only has 38 pts. I researched all 8th graders with last names A-E, about 80 students, and there were only 5 students with less points. Now I am all for working for intrinsic rewards, but it is difficult when she complains about others with 200+ reward paints and the equity of it all. It will also be difficult if the reward buy-in is made low enough for her to participate because then students with high points will say, “I don’t need to follow through as well next time because I don’t need that many points for the reward.” Just my thoughts and concerns

I have a class of 8th graders who have noticed the discrepancy between the two teams in the awarding of points. When looking at my A&H classes, most students in Enterprise have 200 or more points, while those in Atlantis have between 50-70 points. They are starting to feel as if they are being punished and will not be able to participate in the activities.

If your Chromebook does not have a lock screen, there are students who will take it upon themselves to award themselves PBIS points. I had a couple students do this during a time when I had my Chromebook on my desk and was across the room working with another group of students.
