-The main character, Jonas is an 11-year-old boy and we learn that Jonas seems to be nervous about what's going to happen in December. Adults and children were frightened and confused as well after seeing one in the present time. Everyone was ordered to go to the nearest building and stay there after this had all passed. Jonas was all alone at home because his parents are working and his little sister, Lily, was working after-school hours at the Childcare Centre.

Judging by the first chapter, I feel like the characters live in a highly controlled society. Everyone seems deadpan and inhuman. There's just something about it that I find..weird.

-In this chapter, We learn that there are certain ceremonies. Jonas is talking about an upcoming ceremony of "12". Jonas' Father talks about his ceremony experiences, describing them on positive terms. For example, in The ceremony of "1", When every year, a newborn child receives a name and gets assigned to a family. Jonas remembers the ceremony of "1" when his parents obtained his little sister, Lily after his parent's application for a girl was approved. Jonas thinks about the ceremony of "12", Not really sure of what he would really like to do for the rest of his life.

-The ceremony of "12" implies that childhood has officially come to an end. It is clear to me that the citizens of this uncanny and strange place have little to no freedom and are completely under the control of their government.

-Jonas' Father is a Nurturer. That means he is a caretaker for newborn children. He brings the new child, Gabriel. The child's comfort object is a stuffed Hippo which is an unusual word for anyone in the community. Lily gleefully points out that Gabe has pale eyes just like Jonas. Jonas seems to be irritated by that remark because to him, pointing out someone's differences is considered rude but also because pale eyes are rare in the community. Most people in the community have dark eyes. as Lily stares at the newborn, Lily has the idea of being a birth mother. She thinks new children are cute, and birthmothers have an easy life but she is instantly persuaded to follow a different position. 
-While using an apple in a game of catch with Asher, Jonas' best friend, He suddenly sees the apple momentarily change its appearance in midair. It happened a few times to the point where Jonas went home to examine the apple.

-I think that Jonas has some sort of special ability. It may explain the pale eyes. If both Gabe and Jonas have unusual eyes, Maybe they both have a rare ability. It's just my prediction though because it could just be a coincidence.

-Jonas is riding his bike to the house of Old. When one becomes an "8", they are required to work volunteer hours. Jonas and Asher volunteer at the house of Old as well as an "11" named Fiona. Fiona and Asher start to help bathe an elderly woman Jonas helps bathe an elderly woman named Larissa. Larissa tells Jonas about the release of a man named Roberto that morning. She told him about his speech before they let him go. Soon after, Jonas asks Larissa about what happens during a release and where the elderly go after the release. Larissa tells him that nobody knows and that they just walk through a special door. Right now, I am not sure what "Release" is supposed to mean. It could be a different term for passing away but It cannot explain the special door.

As this chapter begins, The chief elder follows up with the audience; apologizing for the unfortunate event. He has been selected as 'The receiver of memories'. The audience was astonished. Only one person can be selected as The receiver of memories. It was an extremely important role. It is a position that will require storing all the memories of the people's erased memories. The chief says that the last receiver of memories backfired and was too painful to remember. The new receiver had to be elected unanimously. The chief lists the qualities a receiver must have which are intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom, and the capacity to see beyond. I think the last one has something to do with his pale eyes and the apple changing its form. As Jonas stares into the large audience, He sees a man with pale eyes. Much like his. The sharing of dreams is the initial ritual in Chapter 5. Often, Jonas didn't participate because he rarely dreams. Lily and Mother talk about their dreams which are clearly about breaking the law. However, Jonas had a vivid dream in which he persuaded Fiona to take off her clothes and bathe her. In the dream, He mentioned that he felt angry and felt slightly embarrassed afterward. Jonas described this dream to be "wanting" and desired. He is 11 though, and at around that age is when people go through changes in their minds and bodies. Dreams like this are normal. After further discussing this, Jonas discovers that this is called a "Stirring". She says that She and Jonas' Father had expected it to happen sooner or later and that it happens to everyone and it will soon happen to Lily. We learn there is a pill for Stirrings that Asher takes as well.

From what I noticed in this chapter, my prediction is that Stirrings are a different way of saying puberty or a start to maturity and preparation for adulthood. Jonas' mom said that these were 'Pleasurable feelings' and that it begins with a dream. Later, Jonas said he was confused but at the same time, he liked those feelings.

-The chapter starts out with Jonas and his family waiting excitedly to attend the December Ceremony which will be attended by every citizen of the community . Lily was upset about her new privilege this year and she will not receive a bicycle and would have to wait another year. Jonas tried cheering her up explaining how every ceremony has something special to it and reminded her about her front-buttoned jacket which made her 'more independent'. Jonas took his pill and they left for the Ceremony and sat in the auditorium. 
-At this years ceremony, Baby Gabriel will not be taking part in the Ceremony due to him being undeveloped and not as quickly as expected. Normally, he would have been labelled as, 'Inadequate'. For now, Gabriel will be staying at Jonas' house because of his fathers nurturing role. 
-We learn that a replacement child is necessary for the death of a child and replaced with a new child. After, the have a ceremony called, The ceremony of Loss.

When Jonas' selection is revealed, his life starts to change. Jonas experiences a new sense of separation and loneliness. The supper with the family at the house is less lively than normal, but Jonas's mother assures him he has been "greatly honored." Jonas eventually asks his parents about The Receiver, whose selection was a failure. Only mentioning that her name should never be used or given to a new child. Nobody ever saw her again, so that's all they know for sure about what happened to her. 
-Jonas goes back to his room to study the training manual he was handed at the ceremony. For days or even months, most Twelves will study the large folders they get but instead, Jonas received a short folder with barely anything in it.
-It begins with instructions to go straight to training from school and directly home after. He can't ask for any medication from any injury from his training and he is encouraged to be rude and ask any questions even if they are considered inappropriate. As Jonas reads his instructions, he notices that he has been given permission to lie. The community is very strict when it comes to lying so this was a huge privilege. Jonas comes to realize that he can't trust anyone anymore because there could be others granted the ability to lie.

In chapter 10, Jonas goes to the Annex to start his first day of training. An assistant unlocks a door in front of Jonas which befuddled Jonas because doors are never locked in the community. The assistant escorted him to a different room. It was similar to the dwelling at Jonas' family unit. Jonas examines the books and the furniture around the room. Jonas meets the Receiver, who reveals that transferred memories go back many generations. The job as the Receiver of memory will require you to store all the memories around the world to remember. Jonas will learn new things such as the things that come outside of the community; known as, Elsewhere. Additionally, we are reminded that this is a "painful and difficult job," much of which Jonas finds baffling.
We also discover that nobody in the community knows words such as 'sled, snow, runners, downhill,' or that books besides dictionaries and rulebooks exist.

As the chapter begins, Jonas starts to hear the man's memories. In the recollection, Jonas becomes aware of his own movement and the surrounding details. The first recollection that Jonas recalls involves him sledding down a snowy hill. He picks up a number of new words during the encounter, including "snow," "runners," and "sled."
-Snow makes its first appearance in Jonas' memory. In this winter wonderland, as he sleds down a hill, his consciousness teaches him new words. When he eventually opens his eyes and makes his way back to the Annex, he wonders why these things no longer exist. We learn that this society changed to "Sameness" as a result of climate control's unreasonable effects.
Jonas also receives the memories of two other things, including sunburn and sunlight, both of which are removed from their community.
The Receiver remains silent and doesn't respond, despite the fact that Jonas believes he knows the type of pain he will feel. According to my analysis, the pain is much worse than sunburn and is so painful for his student.

Chapter 12 begins with Mother and Father commenting on Gabriel's poor quality of sleep. Jonas thinks about his sound sleep and vivid visions. Jonas is haunted by the sudden alterations in his vision, which he cannot explain. Later that day, when he runs into Fiona, he also notices that her hair has changed, though not in the manner that she appears to have noticed. Jonas does not yet realize that the Elders selected him for the job in part because of his capacity to See Beyond.
-Later that day, when Jonas meets the Giver, he attempts to describe what he's seeing, and the Giver puts him to the test by having him examine some books. The Giver's doubts were supported by Jonas' response: Jonas is beginning to perceive color. The first thing Jonas sees when he starts to See Beyond is the color red, which is Fiona's hair color. The Giver confesses that he had suspicions about this.

In Chapter 15, Jonas finds The Giver in agonizing pain when he arrives for his training. As The Giver begs Jonas to take the pain away, Jonas, who is certain he will be told to return home, begins to say he will see The Giver tomorrow. Jonas receives memories of battle from The Giver after he puts his hands on his shoulders. Jonas recalls a scene filled with devastation and filth. When Jonas hears a young child crying out for water while being hurt, a scared and injured horse runs by. The slightly older boy is dying in front of Jonas as he gives water to the child while also looking at his own wounds. Jonas lies in the dirt, unable to move due to the severe pain he is experiencing, listening to the men shouting and the terrified animals. In his own bed, Jonas emerged from the memory just as he was about to pass away. The Giver asks Jonas to accept his apology at the end of the chapter for bringing such a painful memory on him.

Jonas was traumatized. He did not want to ever encounter that memory ever again. It completely destroyed him and his childhood. However, He returns to the giver and he receives memories of happiness such as a birthday party. Jonas discovers art and colors he has never seen before and starts to understand what it means to be unique. One day, Jonas asks The Giver about his favorite memory. He transfers the memory to Jonas to experience it and asks him to describe it. It was warm and happy. The Giver gave a way to describe the memory: love. Jonas asks about these old people in the memory and The Giver explains the concept of grandparents. That night, Jonas checks on baby Gabriel, sleeping. Jonas' Father is confident that soon, Gabe will be named and assigned to a family. Jonas wants things to change in the community. The next morning, Jonas does not take his pills, Which is against the rules.

Jonas asks the Giver regarding release after the incidents from the previous day. Jonas is aware that it is against his rules to ask for release, and the Giver is also prevented from doing so until Jonas has completed his training. , Jonas asks The Giver, "Do you ever think about release?"   Since Jonas is not fully aware of release or the reasons why the rules forbid either him or the Giver from being released, his question is not clear and specific. The Giver and Jonas talk about what happened when a Receiver was in training ten years ago. Her name was Rosemary . She spent five weeks working with the Giver before requesting her release after facing excruciating memories of loss and suffering. The town faced a catastrophe after Rosemary was released. The people in the neighbourhood who weren't used to dealing with intense emotions were the ones she held memories for. Most of her memories were happy, but the community was overwhelmed by her memories of loss, pain, and suffering. The Giver recalls that he was unable to help the community through its problems because of his own sadness and devastation. Jonas understands that the year's worth of memories he currently possesses would cause chaos on the community if he were to be lost or released. But something in this conversation has given the Giver an idea that he has to consider as a strategy to improve the community.

Jonas is obviously furious and terribly upset at his new discovery of release.  His feelings are changing the way he views society, therefore he won't go home.
The Giver and Jonas talk about a strategy in which Jonas will leave the community and never come back, leaving the people with his memories. Although he asks the Giver to accompany him, he discovers that without the Giver's help, the town will descend into "total chaos." The Giver also explains that he is no longer able to tell the color and that he is too weak for the dangerous journey. After his job is done, he also wants to be with his daughter, Rosemary.

The Journey to elsewhere becomes increasingly difficult. Jonas even gets a ankle injury. Biking becomes more challenging. Gabriels safety depends on Jonas. There were some parts of the voyage where Jonas felt some sort of happiness but he is aware that if he had stayed, he would have gone without emotions, colour, and love. Gabriel would then be dead. He had made the proper decision. Jonas and Gabe start to starve and are lacking food.

Jonas believes that his goal is getting closer, thus he must continue through tough circumstances. He continues through the snow on foot until he reaches the top of a hill when his bicycle stops moving. He sits down on a sled holding Gabriel after immediately recognising the surroundings as being familiar.
They can see lights, colours, and memories of love and joy come to life as they fall to Elsewhere. In fact, he thinks he can hear singing ;what The Giver refers to as "Hearing Beyond". As this is our last chapter, The author leaves us on a Cliffhanger. So this story comes to an end.
