The message was hope and authority from racial oppression.

The tone of the story is more hopeful

The main character, the mother and ms. Flowers

They own a store in a more African American place of the community, the setting contributes to the racial oppression.

"On that first day, I ran down the hilland into the road... and had the good sense to stop running before I reached the store." I believe that the freedom of running down brings hope.

"Pride is a sin. And 'cording to the Good Book, it goeth before a fall." They believe that pride is a sin, being her true self and things she were born with.

Pretty Beyond Belief

I believe the message was that the things people desire are somethimes nothing is what it seems. Like the grass is greener on the other side. Though, in the story approval from others, such as magazines and her mother, they didnt define her and she is her own beauty.
The tone of the story seems like the narrator is being bereft of, bereft of the beauty that her mother has and not having it.
The narrator and the mom, the mom makes the narrator believe that she isnt pretty and this occupies the narrators thoughts.
The setting is set in California, I believe that california is more like the stereotype of being beautiful and more movie like, though the narrator is told to believe that she isnt.
One of the lines in the story was about her realizing she is fine, that she now has her own boyfriend who believes that she is beautiful making her realize that she didnt need to believe in others who were doubtful about her.
"I believed that I was not attaractive according to an American aesthetic based on Marilyn Monroe as the ultimate sex goddess" I believe the quote given makes the narrator apply herself to things she isnt in beauty standards, causing her to go to her mother and asking if she think shes pretty or not.

You have to be honest towards yourself and others when having complicated feelings.

The tone of the story is more fearful and tense.

The characters are Saeed, and his mother. Though the mother doesnt do much, the mother causes Saeed to be more open about himself and think about things he cant tell to his mother.

The setting is in his college, I think that it shows how hes old enough to be more honest and develop as a person.

" I was happy, but the moment didnt feel like I thought it would. It wasnt final." "I think I didnt feel as if a burden had beenlifted because my gay was never actually the burdern.

I believe that this quote is important because it makes him realize that the things he had hidden werent that much of a burden as assumed and his honesty towards himself that there wasnt a heavy feeling.

Going To Japan

I believe the message of the story was that the culteral differences make people feel out of place with others.
The tone is more fearful, or guilt, I believe this because in the story the narrator is in a new country and she doesnt understand anything as well as not knowing anything in the culture besides a single appologetic line.
Narrator, Aunt Zelda. The narrator experience new things and learn abut the culture, though not knowing anything, she makes observations of things that had happened to her.
The setting of the story is Japan, the new environment causes her to have cultural differences. Making her foreign to other things.
The transition between, " I intended to do my very best to respect the cultureal differences, avoid sensitive topics I might not comprehend, and, in short, be anything but an Ugly American." to " I was struggling through my days and nights in the grip of boredom's opposite- Panic." She realized her excitment at first turned into something where she doesnt know and she feels like an outcast.
" I was struggling through my days and nights in the grip of boredom's opposite- Panic." Her enthusiasm from being a traveler to Japan turned into a panic relating to foreign experiences.
