Bradstreet uses the loss of her house to question Puritan beliefs. She openly feels regret towards what happened to her house which is shown through anaphoras of "No" and "Not" (30-33). Normal Puritans would hide that they regret losing anything.

Two allusions are found in the poem that alludes to the meaning that nothing lasts forever.
It also contains an end-line rhyming. (43-54)

Puritans see heaven as a much more superior and dominant land compared to the actual world. Anne Bradstreet agrees with it; her metaphor in the poem compares her physical house to her home in heaven. (lines 39, 43-44) This conveys her respect and praise for God, so she isn't as upset with her house burning since a better house will be up above the clouds.

This poem has contributed to shaping American Literature by using a specific rhyme scheme of AABB. This type of rhyme scheme is used in many literary works of hers and can influence the poem by showing the mood and helping to understand it a little more.

Religion and faith give people a sense of purpose in living, now knowing that there is a greater plane of existence that can be achieved. Flesh and Spirit are described as completely opposite where Flesh is centered around materialistic values and Spirit is centered around ambitious goals that do not exist on Earth.

Faith and religion can blind people from the truth by allowing people to believe in something that could potentially be false. In the poem, Spirit believes in God so much that she is adamant that she is an elect. By believing she is an elect, she throws away her past beliefs and blindly embraces the belief of living in heaven. She even goes so far as to call Earth "lesser" and "filth".

Faith and religion can reveal the truth to people by allowing doubts in their beliefs to happen. In the poem, Flesh is seen repeatedly asking questions about Spirit's beliefs and goals. By allowing doubts to occur in religion, one can be able to find the truth that exists in it.

In this poem, she mentions and compares the Puritan beliefs to her own and how they do and don't apply to her. (4). Anne also used the term, "ill-formed offspring" to relate to how her ideals would be seen to other Puritans. She uses her poem to show her dilemma between having her own beliefs and fully converting to Puritan beliefs.

The reason it is against Puritanism is because she wants to "hide" or "conceal" the child/work which signifies how she must hide her true thoughts/beliefs.
