I wish I spoke Spanish! I have tried a few times, but it has been hard during COVID. I always translate all of my classroom materials, though, and identify students who can help translate. I read aloud in Spanish, sometimes to my students’ chagrin. I would like to know more about the Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Dominican (and more) histories of my students. Sometimes I feel like I don’t know where to start, as there is so much I don’t know. I start with my students, though, and they are always happy to share. Even though I have so much work to do, I teach with love, and they are glad to be in my classroom as it is a more welcoming, democratizing space than a lot of the other ones that they are in throughout the school day because while language is sometimes a barrier, movement is a bridge. I am always asking students to share with me- I know that learning more is my responsibility, and it is not on them to “educate” me. However, they love sharing their traditions and are so welcoming and full of pride. For years I have been teaching the "Mexican hat dance" to my students. She asked me why I was calling the dance that, when in Mexico that is not what they call it.
