100 settlers were about to arrive at the site where the first permanent English Colony in America was going to be located. They arrived in 1607. The ships brought more than people, but also brought supplies to get going. They went to Chesapeake Bay and then went up the James River.

When they got there it was an immediate struggle. They arrived in 1607. I said they brought supplies, but NOT enough. They tried to survive but nothing worked. Lots of people died due to lack of food. Disease was also part of the killing. But still, English kept coming and coming. Men, women, and children. They had to make a rule, "You don't work, you don't eat." The Colony was not looking good in terms of survival.

The winter of 1609-1610 was called the "Starving Time." It was called this because there was no food. They couldn't get by in the growing season, how would they possibly eat in the winter? Two thirds of the settlement had died that horrible winter. Everyone was hungry, and those who didn't die were close to it.

John Rolfe brought a happy ending to part of the surviving settlers. He introduced the tobacco plant, a cash crop, to the Jamestown Colony. This happened in 1613. John Rolfe helped and the settlers made more money. Tobacco brought possible hope to the colony.

Part of the unsuccessful start to the colony was complete lack of leadership. But then John Smith stepped up and lead the colony. This lead to less people dying. Now that the colony had a leader, they could actually get some things done. Things improved for a while; but not long after people were dying again.
