Smartness is a type of intelligence that is manifested in many ways including your racial/ethnic backgrounds, your knowledge on various topics, your experiences throughout life, etc. Everything in your life essentially builds your smartness in some way. Therefore, this means everyone has smartness, but different variations/kinds of smartness based on one's experiences, interests, and knowledge. You can develop your smartness by learning more about yourself, your surroundings, your interests, or just widening your viewpoint on various issues. I found in this class I learned a lot about how smartness can originate in many different contexts and how I should keep an open mind when learning new things to see how it impacts/relates to people/things that I may not think about immediately. This means smartness is developed with time and reflection. My drawing shows some influences a person may have to develop their smartness (their surroundings-home, their place of living-US, their interests-baseball, books/reading, and their friends/family/other people.

Lance: I drew what is supposed to be people linked together inside of a brain like neurons. I think smartness is just an outward expression of what we have personally experienced and internalized through our own discoveries and experiences and have distilled down to a thought process that we use to interpret the world. I believe that everyone has smartness and similarly everyone is born with the same amount of smartness, and the only difference being that our lives shape our smartness differently. The only reason that you may feel some people are not "smart" is simply because their smartness is just not part of mainstream society's way of thinking.

It is clear that smartness doesn't develop in a vacuum. Although individuals can hold smartness, I think it is through collaboration or interaction with the diverse people and world that surrounds us that we develop our personal intelligence and foster smartness at a higher level. My drawing is one of the most common images of diversity, and that's because I truly believe that diversity in what, who, when, and where we learn from is what allows for our smartness to reach a state of perpetual growth as this means will never be a lack of something we can learn from. And this class has shown me that this learning takes place in more than the traditional Western classroom we're used to but that perhaps our education should also be modified to include discussion of the land we live on, minority ways of thinking, our connection with nature, our cultural beliefs, and so much more as these all enrich our worldviews and thus, I believe, our smartness. Just realizing how much I didn't know about what smartness can look like and how all of our definitions vary showed me that there are likely still many factors that contribute to our smartness and how society views this construct that I am still unaware of. But by seeking to expand our perspectives and pursue lifelong growth, I think we can both individually and collectively develop our smartness for as long as we live.
