Walking through the electronics section at Target this past weekend, it was hard not to notice the vast selection of video games occupying row after row of white shelving in the foremost corner of the store. Upon closer inspection of each game, there appeared to be a theme among the covers. Each typically had a dark color scheme accompanied by the occasional burst of red. In addition, the predominate image shown on each was a powerful male figure (or figures), sometimes surrounded by weapons or explosions. A perfect example of this is seen on the front of Assassin's Creed Unity and the back of Modern Warfare 3. Another good example is Deadpool, with the addition of women in revealing outfits. But why all these brooding colors and cliched depictions of buff male heroes? Most simply put, because it attracts the male audience. The marketers play into the exact stereotype that boys are more drawn to sports, violence, and sex appeal. They also make the assumption that by putting strong, cool looking males on the front, that boys will idolize them and therefore want to play their character in the game. I for one know of many girls such as myself that enjoy playing these games, though, despite these features and knowing that they were "not intended for us." This just makes it all the more gratifying that by buying these video games, girls like me are inadvertently continuing to break the gender norms.
