Post 1 (9/30/2019) Russia Exploiting Africa - The Invisible Hand

The article talks about Russia inserting itself into the African Republics political election to control the diamond trade. Russia promises it has good intentions by "ridding the country of corruption". What's really happening though is that Russia is taking advantage and benefiting more from this deal than the African Republic because now they control diamond trade.

I connect this to Neo-Classical economics such as the Invisible hand because Russia goes into this region for its own self interest. This also reminded me of the IMF, where they help countries short term, but only the IMF benefits long term. The country can't fix the fundamental problem and becomes reliant on aid.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/30/world/russia-diamonds-africa-prigozhin.html

Post 2 (9/30/2019) Deadly Roads for the poor in Thailand - UN Sustainable Development Goals

This article tells a story of a poor woman in Thailand who could only afford a motorcycle and was forced to travel on an unpaved unsafe for the poor. Only the rich with nice cars get paved roads in that country. The woman got hit by a drunk driving police man and he was not prosecuted. He still has his license and his job.

I connect this to the UN Sustainability goals. Goal #9 promotes safe infrastructure (including roads) for public use in developing countries. If there was a safe road the woman may have had a better chance at avoiding death. And goal #16 which is justice. The drunk officer should have been punished.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/19/world/asia/thailand-inequality-road-fatalities.html

Post 3 (10/14/2019) Why Amazon Fires Keep Raging 10 Years After A Deal to End Them- Privatization

This article talks about the meat industry and how there are fires blazing in the amazon forest right now because private meat organizations promised they would not conduct their business in this place and they failed to do so because they couldn't resist the money.

I connected this to the negative affects of privatization because the meat industry decided to stay in the amazon forest when they new it was in danger and they said they wouldn't. Their duty was to make money and this doesn't matter the cost to the world or people. Now the whole world is at risk because the amazon is one of the largest co2 filters we have left in the world and hosts a variety of species.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/10/world/americas/amazon-fires-brazil-cattle.html

Post 4 (10/14/2019) Deal Struck in Ecuador to Cancel Austerity Package and End Protests- Austerity Politics

Ecuador's government finally pulled out of an IMF loan for over four billion dollars to restore peace and keep people from protesting. The country originally took out the loan because their economy was gong through a hard time when fuel prices became very competitive and their main trade is oil.

I connect this with the IMF and Austerity policies because the protesters were so upset because the IMF was controlling what the government could and couldn't do with their money including how much the prices for gas are. This really affected workers and people in rural settings.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/13/world/americas/ecuador-protests-lenin-moreno.html

Post 5 (10/14/2019) With No End to Unrest in Sight Hong Kong's Economic Pain Deepens- Adam Smith & Hayek

This article talks about how the people are not happy with the system of government in Hong Kong right now so they are protesting and not consuming. This has affected the economy severely and many businesses and restaurants are going under. The country appears to be experiencing one of its fastest worst recessions yet.

I connect this with Adam Smith the Invisible hand and Hayek because they would say that the market and the people will regulate themselves. In this case that is proving to be untrue because Honk Kong is in a economic recession and the economy has tanked majorly.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/13/world/asia/hong-kong-protest-economy.html
