Cardiac arrest is reversible in most victims if it's treated within a few minutes. When a patient experiences SCA, a Code response is activated and the bedside provider begin CPR according to the guidelines established by AHA. To enhance provider CPR and improve patient outcomes, a biphasic defibrillator with an CPR Dashboard should be utilized.

SCA occurs suddenly and often without warning. It is triggered by an electical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). With its pumping action disrupted, the heart cannot pump blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. Seconds later, a person loses consciousness and has no pulse. Death occurs within minutes if the victim does not receive treatment.

9. PROs and Cons of the Zoll Defibrillator Technology

Pro: According to AHA, research has revealed that high-quality CPR improves survival from cardiac arrest. Therefore, the implementation of the Zoll defibrillator (with the CPR Dashboard) within the acute care setting allows the provider to quickly modify poor skills performance with chest compressions-which improves the patient's chance of survival.

Con: The Zoll defibrillator has advanced technology that's designed to improve patient's outcomes. However, the benefits of this technology is only as good as the end-user's working knowledge of the equipment-which makes the technology null and void if the provider ignores the visual aids and voice prompts provided by the CPR Dashboard.

10. Opinion: Often healthcare providers, who respond to cardiac arrest, assume that their CPR skills are adequate and according to the AHA standards of resuscitation. This is not always the case! Therefore, the use of technology such as the Zoll CPR Dashboard can remove barriers by taking the guesswork out of resuscitation while driving high-quality CPR. The benefit from implementing this technology within they acute care setting can improve patient outcomes.
