Throughout the day, we communicate in a variety of ways. We converse with different people and in different situations. To become not just a competent but an outstanding public speaker, it is crucial to recognize and understand the dos and don'ts in public speaking.

Here are some tips for public speaking for people who might be nervous about giving speeches again after a break or who might get nervous even when they speak at bigger gatherings.

Public Speaking Dos

1. Be prepared - Writing down the entire speech and practicing it repeatedly will help you become comfortable knowing your main points even if you are a very inexperienced public speaker.

   
   

2. Bring notes or PowerPoint to help - The majority of skilled presenters can talk without using notes or a slideshow. It's acceptable to have help deliver your speech if you're not accustomed to public speaking and start to feel nervous in front of a larger audience. When using a slide show, make sure the content is brief and the design is straightforward. Try not to go overboard in order to avoid having an impact on the presentation as a whole.

   
   

3. Be nice and approachable - Making people feel welcome and showing them that you appreciate them will always improve the way you deliver your speech, in the words of Maya Angelou: "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Never forget how crucial it is for a speaker to establish a rapport with their audience. Your speech won't accomplish its goals and no one will be interested in listening to it.

   
   

4. Calm down and relax - It is not always necessary to speak fast with a loud voice. The problem with this is that your audience might not feel comfortable and will get intimidated. Additionally, if you are midway through a quick speech and you abruptly stop because you forgot a few lines, the audience may react negatively. Speaking clearly and slowly at times will help you come across as calm, collected, and well-prepared. 5. Communicate with your viewers - Establishing a good rapport with your audience is more important here than simply giving them information. Posing queries that compel listeners to ponder and formulate answers in their minds is one technique to keep them interested in your speech. You can also keep their interest and attention until the very end of your talk by sharing common knowledge or experiences.

Public Speaking Don'ts

1. Don't be over-rehearsed - There are drawbacks to being overly practiced. There will be moments when your speech seems forced and predetermined. Speaking verbatim from memory and not interacting with the audience is the most boring thing a speaker can do.

   
   

2. Don't ignore your audience - Even before your speech begins, it is crucial to be conscious of your audience. The success of your speech is greatly influenced by the audience. Make sure you are watching every audience member closely to see if they are still engaged in your speech or if they find your remarks offensive. 3. Don't embarrass your audience - Don't act like you are the smartest people in the room and that your audience knows nothing about what you are talking. Avoid giving them the impression that they lack intellectual capacity by acting as though they were unfamiliar with the material.

   
   

4. Avoid being dishonest - Never deceive your audience. Don't fabricate claims in an attempt to impress or sound convincing to others. Understand that deceiving your audience equates to deceiving oneself. As long as you remain true to your integrity as a speaker, it's acceptable to make errors and own up to them because nobody is perfect.

   
   

5. Don't be afraid - Never should you begin a conversation feeling scared or nervous. Never forget that your audience is waiting for you to speak and is eager to learn from you. Pose proudly, smile, and get ready to dazzle everyone. You are an expert in this field, so don't be afraid!
