Shelby, One of my classmates, presentation stood out to me because talked about how cheerleading has been a huge part of her life and where I am from cheerleading is not that common so it was cool to see that people from all over have different interests that make up who they are.

I grew up in a very white town in New Jersey. It was so white dominate that the teachers in my high school could name all the kids of color on their hands. One time in the locker room someone stole my wallet and I reported it to the office. The office with no evidence called in the black student and blamed them for taking it. It ended up being a random white kid and they did not even get in trouble. The school was threatening to suspend the black student if he did not admit it but when we found out it was a white student they had almost no consequences.

After reflecting back on my autobiography I realized that my gender identity has made a huge impact on my life interests and who I am as a person. When I was younger, I use to love playing sports. During recess at school all the girls would play tag or play on the jungle gym, but you could always find me playing basketball with the boys. I grew up with one older sister and I always admired her every move. When my sister became a certain age where she learned to do hair and make up, I slowly noticed myself give up that athletic side of me. While she never forced me to copy her interests, she introduced me to things I would not have found at my age on my own. Soon enough I traded in my running sneakers for fashion sneakers and my chapstick turned into lip gloss. Because my sister was my role model, I assumed that this was what every girl was suppose to do. Looking back on this makes me wonder if I would be the way I am if I were to have had a brother. Though it is easy for me to think that society placed this girly norm on me, I do feel that I would eventually have come around to this as I love dressing up and doing my make up.

Since I was born, english was the only language that I was exposed to. So that being said, it was not till I traveled or was not in my home where I would hear a different language. I remember my baby sitter when I was younger spoke primarily Spanish. While it was very hard to verbally communicate with her, she would use hand gestures and body language to help me understand. I wish that I had been introduced to another language when I was born because I feel that I am missing out on a super cool experience and how language is a key way of forming relationships.

The class discussion today was something that is extremely relatable for me as I struggled as a child and to this day with learning differences. I feel that because I did not fit the perfect student criteria, I was made to feel less than my classmates. Often when I tell people that I was once in the resource room classes, they look at me and tell me that it doesnt look like anything is wrong with me. This is something that always irritated me because I felt embarrassed to be labeled in category with disabilities. But the resource classroom provided me with tools and allowed me to use my agency in a smaller class setting which allowed me to grow tremendously as a student and person. Attending UT has given me the confidence and showed me that I am no less than anyone else and that finding what works for me does not make me any less of a person.

Piaget claimed that children construct their own knowledge by giving meaning to the people, places, and things in their world. During my childhood, I quickly learned that a teacher reciting information was not beneficial to me. It was experience that helped me understand and give meaning to my life. When I was younger, I did not have any animals. I would watch shows and read books that included them but I never had one. But because of these experiences I had, it taught me that animals were pets and we took care of them. I then proceeded to go outside and bring a frog home. I thought that it was humans jobs to care for all animals. I quickly was told that animals from the outside were not all pets. This experience provided me knowledge what the difference between wild life animals and pets were. Eventually my parents brought home a dog and the dog became my pet. Having a dog gave me meaning to what a pet was and I was able to figure this out from my curiosity of wanting to take care of animals. This can be viewed as a trial and error experience as I attempted to take care of a frog from the wild and it failed as that was not a pet.

My parents both grew up in the town that I am from. Millburn is a small town located in north Jersey and consists of all four seasons. The indigenous people from my land are the Munsee Tribe. They were people of the various rivers and creeks. Land, earth and outdoors play a huge role into play as this is what helps build you as a person. Where I live is a very green and suburb life style. I remember playing outside a lot no matter the season. I never needed toys to entertain me because the outdoors allowed me to use my full agency and loose parts. In the summer I would build homes for animals with sticks. In the winter I would use the snow and make snowmen. Because of where I lived, play was very safe and I did not really need super vision to be outside. THe outdoors is very significant to children as they are able to test their imagination and boundaries.

Technology was something that was just being introduced and evolved over my childhood. I remember when through the first 5 years of my life that I did not really have technology involved in my play life. I would watch some tv shows but at that time you still had to change the channel by walking up to the tv. (or at least that's how I remember it) I think it was around the ages of 5-6 years old did the first iphone and ipad was introduced. I think the impact technology had on my childhood was that I was a very curious and hyper kid that this allowed me to put my energy into something. But I think if effected my focus and made me a lazier worker. Having technology allows people to have to answers at their finger tips, you no longer need to wonder or search that far for answers. I think this will only hurt children in their early development because we are only progressing in technology and soon enough we wont even need to think for ourselves.
