This exchange between Eddie and Mickey is the final moment that leads Eddie to sign his life away and join the army. This is an important point in the story because it represents the personal betrayal and emotional pain influencing Eddie's decision to leave home in the first place. Eddie has been uncertain about his future, and weighed down by the family obligations. With Mickey's betrayal as the last straw, Eddie is fully impacted by this almost self-inflicted hurt by Mickey. No one wants this pain and disappointment when they return home. For Eddie, the army symbolizes an escape from pain, shame, and guilt of being at home as it relates to the loss of Mickey's trust. For the readers, this reflects emotional growth in Eddie's character, and provides some reflection that he did not simply join for the noble patriotic sense, but rather to address personal loss and betrayal.

This excerpt in the book is very important and reveals how Eddie has had many people he loves die. This paragraph also foreshadows what is going to happen later as it says "It's as if he knew he was going to die." It reveals how he has attended many funerals. Ultimately this excerpt shows that Eddie has had many sad moments in his life and has had to go through many rough moments in his life and that he knows his time is also coming sooner or later.

In this part of the book Eddie expresses his emotions towards his father and how he is still mad at him for what he did. He is told that no one is born with anger and that once you die the soul is freed. So in order for Eddie to be able to move on in heaven he has to forgive his father. But, Eddie can't just say that he forgives him he must truly understand why he felt the way he did towards his father and why he no longer has to feel that way. This is an important part in the book as Eddie will finally have to forgive his father in order to move in and will be able to fully understand what happened and move on from his anger. He will also find out the true story of everything that happened and the reasons why his father acted the way he did.

In this moment Eddie has with Ruby, Ruby explains to Eddie how him holding in his anger is like a poison and instead of making the other person feel bad it hurts him more than it hurts them. We think that being angry at someone will hurt them more than it hurts us but, in reality we are just harming ourselves by not letting that anger go and letting it consume us. This is a very important part in the book as Eddie learns that he needs to stop holding in his anger in order to help himself out.

It shows us Eddies emotions towards Marguerite and what he truly felt for her. And it even reveals how there first interaction and how Eddie felt nervous. This is a very important part to Eddies character as it shows how he did have feelings for someone as every time he thinks of her he goes back to this moment and he shows how much it meant to him and to the person he is today. It reveals how Eddie was not as lonely as he is now and that he wishes he had her at all times.

He felt stuck in a routine with this new lifestyle and thought he had no way out of it. The interaction with the old lady also shows that Eddie is still hurt by his fathers past actions. This is important to us at is shows that Eddie has major regrets about the way he lived his life and wished he didn't work where he did.

In this moment in the story it's Eddie's last moments on Earth and in his final moments whilst the ride is malfunctioning all he hears is the screams of the little girl he is trying to save. Eddie does not know if he saves her or not as he dies before he gets to see what happened to the girl. This is very important as throughout the story the whole time in Heaven Eddie is wondering whether or not he saved the girl. The impact this moment has on the rest of the story is massive.

This excerpt describes the moment when Eddie’s mother tells him that his father is very sick and later dies of pneumonia. It’s important because it shows how Eddie’s father’s choices, like coming home drunk and soaked, led to his illness. Eddie’s mom blames herself for not calling a doctor sooner, but Eddie knows it’s his father’s fault, not hers. This moment also shows the pain and guilt families feel after a loss, especially when it could have been prevented. It helps explain why Eddie has complicated feelings toward his father, which is a big theme in the book.

Basically the Captain tells him that sacrifices must be made for the greater good. This is referring to how the Captain sacrificed himself in order to be able to save the people he did and also when he shot Eddie in the leg he sacrificed Eddie's leg to save his life. This is important as Eddie finds out what happened to him and why it was done.

Eddie didn’t understand why at the time, but now he realizes it saved his life. This moment also shows the Captain’s sacrifice, as he dies making sure his men are safe. It helps Eddie understand the idea of duty and the painful choices people make during war, which is one of the lessons he learns in heaven.

However, she explains to him how she was there the whole timetable not her physical presence but she was there, the love was still there. She tells him that lost love is still love and even though he couldn’t see her smile or bring him food. The memory is still there she tells him that memory is your best partner. She finally tells him that “life has to end, love doesn’t.” This is very important to Eddie as during the first moments his wife passed away he changed and wasn’t the same person he let the love go away and didn’t hold on to it. He now realizes that she was there with him all along not in physical presence but the spiritual love was still there the memories he had with her were still there he just didn’t see it that way.

This is a very impactful moment in the story as Eddie is left distraught after finding out he killed this innocent girl during WW2 in where Eddie had lit a fire in on a campsite where he thought he saw the image of little girl in there but as he was going to go save her was stopped by a fellow solider. In this moment it is revealed to him that his 5th person was the girl that was in the campsite. However, the girl forgives him for what he did and asks him to "wash her." In order to cleanse himself and her for what had happened. This is a very important in the story as Eddie and Tala have a emotional moment in where they Tala forgives Eddie and Eddie feels a little sense of peace after cleansing her.

However, this is not true as Tala reveals to him his true purpose was children and at first Eddie was confused and it was kind of ironic as the whole book he stresses about if he actually saved the little girl or not before he died. Tala reassured that Eddie's life did have a purpose and makes sure Eddie is 100% aware of it. This is important as throughout the book Eddie is worried that his life had no purpose and he amounted to nothing. But, this clears up his question and leaves of with a sense of foreshadowing as to to reveal what Tala means by his purpose of life was for children.

This excerpt is the emotional moment when Eddie learns that he didn’t save the little girl at the pier he died trying, but she wasn’t pulled to safety. Tala, the girl he unknowingly killed during the war, helps him realize that even though he couldn’t save the girl, his life still had meaning. She tells him that his hands were used to keep children safe through his work at Ruby Pier. This moment is important because it brings Eddie peace and purpose, showing him that his life mattered.
