The story " A Quilt of a Country" is still relevant in 2021. The author discusses many important topics that happen today in the world. From terrorism to racism, the story speaks about a lot. Most of the things said in the text are still happening to this day. Even thought this text was written so long ago it is very relevant to 2021.

For instance, in paragraph 8 it states "Tolerance is the word used most often when this kind of coexistence succeeds, but tolerance is a vanilla-pudding word, standing for little more than the allowance of letting others live unmarked and unmolested." Meaning American's take pride in being a diverse country. Even though they only tolerate immigrants. American's often look down on immigrants. But they always say how diverse and how open they are to different people.

Another example would be, in the text it states "What is the point of a nation in which Arab cabbies chauffeur Jewish passengers through the streets of New York-and which Jewish cabbies chauffeur Arab passengers, too, and yet speak in theory of hatred, one for another?" Meaning we live in a world where we have all types of different people who are all hating on each other. In 2021 right now many people discriminate on others. Especially people of color, immigrants, poor people, etc. In conclusion, the story speaks of things that happened years ago around 9/11 and these same similar things happen even now.

I believe that "A Quilt of a Country is still relevant in 2021 because these problems are still happening people are fighting with each other and others are still getting mistreated for embracing who they are and want to be. For example, people today are being killed over their skin color and gay men are also still being killed for not being "normal". In the story "A Quilt of a Country" it says "Children learn in social studies class and in the news of the lynching of blacks, the denial of rights to women, the murders of gay men." This connects to what i said because back then all of that was happening and it has gotten even worse and hasn't stopped. An example in the story is when Anna Quindlen says what the point of a nation if everyone is always on the verge of fighting each other. In the text it says "What is the point of a nation in which one part seems to be always on the verge of fisticuffs with another, blacks and whites, gays and straights, left and right, Pole and Chinese and Puerto Rican and Slovenian?". What this basically means is that why fight and do what other countries have done which is to divide into new nations but its to impossible to do it because its been interwoven even in its hostilities.

The story "A Quilt of a Country" is still relevant in 2021. Anna Quindlen states, “America is an improbable idea, a mongrel nation built of ever-changing disparate parts”. America is like a quilt because a quilt is made up of a lot of different pieces that are put together into one. Anna Quindlen's purpose is to help us to realize that in the US as a whole, even though we are many different cultures and religions, we manage to find common ground as a whole. We speak of different conflicting cultures, yet we easily deal with one another on a daily basis. Anne Quindlen’s argument is that if standardized testing is to be used, it should at least be interesting and more importantly, such testing should not edit works of literature to the point at which significant meaning is lost. Actually, she is arguing that literature should not be edited at all..

The claims the author makes in "Quilt of a Country" to me are still relevant and happens today in 2021. I say this because every day someone is jealous of someone or a race and wants to take their anger out on them. You see on the news about homophobia and racism. There are even racist groups which I'm not going to get into detail about.

In paragraph 3 the sentence "This is a nation founded on a conundrum" the definition of "conundrum" is "problem". Once a problem starts, it's less likely to end. ESPECIALLY when it's a nationwide problem. People also have different opinions on one another. In paragraph 2, it says "the denial of rights to women, the murders of gay men" showing that people back then AND now will hate something whether we like it or not. These people's opinions on women, gays, and other races are less likely to change.

Things I can use to back this up are stuff you hear on the news, protests, posters, and public service announcements. Obviously, there is some hate in this world and we can't do anything about it. Fights still happen, shootings still happen, and America becomes divided. That is until a world or country tragedy happens.

' A Quilt Of A Country ' is still relevant today in 2021 because nothing as changed. Black people are still losing there lives because of their skin color. Gay and lesbian people are being judge just because they like the same gender. People are getting called ' Terrorist ' Just because they are not the same COLOR as one and other. This story was written in 2001 and over 20 years nothing has changed.

In paragraph 2 it says " Children learn in social studies class and in the news of lynching of black people, the denial of rights to women, the murders of gay men." Likely this has been going on for a century. " These two are defining ideals; they are in constant conflict." Society cant get along with each other, People can't move on they're stuck in the past. There is no grudging fairness among each other. They fear and despise one and other for whatever so reason. And there is nothing we can do to fix nor change that no matter how long or hard we try.

Black adult and children are being killed by police officers for no reason, it's gotten to the point where we fear if we get pulled over by an officers it might be our last day. It's so much hatred in this world but like for what? Gay men are being criticized just because they like the same gender and happy with there choice. People today are fighting for their life just because of their skin color. Women are losing their rights to abortion. Men feel like their superior and big and mighty , when women are as much stronger and powerful than men.
As a result , 9/11 was a century ago and the same things are still continuously going on.

The story A Quilt of a Country is very relevant to 2021 with many things still happening that due with racism and terrorism. this story talks about these things and they still are great sources today. So now I will tell you the reasons why this story is still relevant.
I believe paragraph 8 tells it best by saying people are tolerant. Being tolerant of someone does not mean you care about them or like them it shows that you don't care. To become a diverse but united nation we need more than tolerance but love for other human beings.
For myself I live in area with mostly people who look like me with the school I go to being 70% black. I know some white people who go here and we get along well. we are more than tolerant we know everyones a human and we act like it. So for me racism is not a big deal right now but that could at any time.

She doesnt understand why they say we are all treated the same wehn were not. Especially considering what has happend and what is happening now. And its sadly still relivant and true now in year 2021 even though it was writen so long ago.

According from evidence through the text, in paragraph 2 "Many of the oft-told stories of the most pluralistic nation on earth are stories not of tolerance, but of bigotry. Slavery and Sweatshops, the burning of crosses and the ostracism of the others" and another peice of evidence in paragraph 2 that supports my claim in my main idea is " children learn in social studies class and in the news of the lynching of blacks, the denial of rights to woman, the murders of gay men. Its difficult to know how to convince then that this amounts to " crown thy good with brotherhood,".

The things that youve heard back then are still going on today.
