In the novel Things Fall Apart, people do not think of Okonkwo as a dependent person. Because of how undermined the love of a mother was, Okonkwo was looked at as a self raised man. One who needed nobody to become who he was. In reality however, Okonkwo, nor anybody else, could endure childhood and rise to the level of success in society that he did without the guidance and nurturing of parents. Even though his mother was not around for long in Okonkwo's early life, it is apparent that the morals she instilled in him so young helped him indefinitely as he grew and fought for his social status. It would be discovered later that this amount of care would be insufficient. And it is because of the short handed care that Okonkwo retained from his parents that he ended up without integrity, and ultimately submitting to the pressures of society.

In society today, people who are reliant on others are viewed as weak. Rather than accepting dependency as a way to become stronger and more successful, society views it as a sign of . However, it isn't realistic to get through life and achieve high levels of success without help from others. People need mothers especially to provide them the skills they need to achieve their goals.
Secondly, the growth and development of a persons ethics and morality is often thought of and looked at as a reflection of the experiences a person encounters throughout life. However, we know it to be true that the development of a person is indeed a manifestation of the guidance that a child receives from his parents in youth. It is true that a person learns from his experiences in life, but the idea that children often end up like their parents does not come from nowhere. This saying/idea is the mere realization of the importance that comes with being raised by loving guardians.
