Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts. He lived in a small house on Milk Street with his dad, Josiah, and his brothers and sisters. He was the 15th child out of 17 children. Ben started school at the age of 8 and ended school at the age of 10. Ben became apprentice to his brother, James when he was 12. He was very curious and loved learning new things. In fact, his curiosity led to him inventing swimming paddles as a young boy. Ben started his own printing shop when he was 22.

Did you know that Benjamin Franklin was an inventor, a scientist, a printer, and a writer? This amazing printer printed the first newspaper in America. The "New England Courant." In addition to his printing business, Franklin was a successful inventor. However, several of his inventions were unpatented because he wanted to help improve the lives of others. He wanted people to be able to use his inventions without without having to pay money to do so. Ben invented bifocals so people no longer had to switch between glasses. His bifocals allowed people to see both near and far away. He also invented the Franklin stove to keep people warm. This brave scientist wanted to know if electricity and lighting were the same so he designed a dangerous experiment with a key and a kite. The experiment was so dangerous that Ben could have died from it! Franklin flew a kite during a thunderstorm and let the lighting hit the kite. The lighting sent a charge to the key tied at the bottom. Ben felt a tingle of electricity. This multi-talented man also helped Thomas Jefferson write the Declaration Of Independence. In 1787, the writer assisted lawmakers in writing the U.S. constitution which documented the laws of the new country. He is also one of the founding fathers.
